It's October, so that means the best time of year everyone: Baseball Playoffs are here!
Starting Friday we have the pre-wild-card (?) round to determine which wild-card team plays in the DS round.
So, Friday we have St. Louis at Atlanta, and Baltimore in Texas.
Saturday we' have the winner of those games taking on Washington and New York (respectively). with the Last games being The A's and Tigers, and SF and Reds.
So dakka, who's looking forward to this years postseason? Predictions?

Baseball finally ends, and everyone celebrates. Unfortunately it is a short-lived victory as baseball returns next year, even though it can be indisputably proven that not a single person has ever derived any measurable amount of enjoyment from witnessing a game of baseball.

This statement is patently false. Baseball is actually the most attended sporting event in the US, making it by sheer numbers, the most popular sport in the US still.

Don't feed the trolls, Ensis. He obviously doesn't like baseball and yet he can't contain himself from acting like a troll in a thread focused on baseball playoffs. Not the first or last time you'll see that from Peregrine, who should have just not opened this thread at all. I'm Predicting Nationals and Texas in the Series, with the Nationals winning in 6. Good pitching beats good hitting. The Yankees are too dependent on the home run, they're streaky, and this is the playoffs. They'll be facing better pitching, now.

I take offense to your predictions on the Yankees (as they are my team ) But, I also cannot see the Nats winning. I think that shutting down Strasburg will hurt them here. That old phrase ride the horse that brought ya comes to mind for them.
Depending on who wins the WC rounds, I can see Atlanta in the series against NY. But I would also pick Detroit against Atl or the Reds.
If its Atlanta and NY, Im going NY in 5.
Either way, I think that this will become one of the best, if not classic Octobers. Each team seems so different from each other, different strengths and weaknesses pitted against each other and so on. It'll be fun to watch.

I'm hoping for a repeat of the 89 series....minus the earthquake of course....with the Giants winning this time.

How ironic would it be if it was a repeat right down to the earthquake (hopefully not as severe an earthquake... just a little reminder quake)

I think the 36,077 fans, a sellout crowd BTW, that attended the A's-Texas game yesterday show just what Male Bovine Excrement the bolded statement really is.
I know Peregrine is trolling the thread.....just wanted to point out the absolute stupidity of his statement.

Or you could think of it like going to church. Nobody actually enjoys it, but they keep going anyway because it's tradition or habit or whatever. Or perhaps its one of those initiation rituals where you have to endure hardship to prove yourself worthy of being in the group.

So long as the Cardinals lose on Friday, I don't care what happens.
I rather enjoy the few months of my life where I can go to the local bar and not have to elbow my way through a sea of bright red shirted Bud Lite drinkers.

Lol, I knew that baseball was big in the St. Louis area, but Bud Lite!? What is the world coming to? Of course, who knows with the way the Rams have been playing, you may be elbowing through a sea of blue and gold soon instead.

Having lived in St. Louis for a time, I know more Rams fans that do not live in St. Louis than I met while living there. So I wouldn't worry that much.
But I agree, Cardinals should lose more. The worst fans of any sports team ever.

Well, because I live in DC (or northern Virginia, more accurately), like everyone else in this miserable metropolis, I have to become a fairweather Nats fan. Just like everyone suddenly started liking the Caps when they began winning, or the Skins when they got RGIII.
I haven't seen a single Nats game this season, though, so...are we good? What are we good at? Who should I talk authoritatively about as the guy who's going to get us the...what is the World Series trophy, a cup? A ring?

The World Series trophy is best described as a trophy:
As for the Nats, since the team shut down their best pitcher in Strasburg, you can talk about Bryce Harper being a big reason why the team has won the NL East.
@Dreadwinter I wouldn't say that Cardinals fans are the worst, I reserve that judgement for Red Sox fans, OR fans who "enjoy" philadelphia sports teams.

Don't get yer hopes up history is on the side of the Yankees. I will say that they DO have momentum on their side though. I wonder if momentum will outplay experience in this series? Should be fun to watch... Come to think of it, the As and Tigers will be fun to watch for much the same reasons.

I'm a Cards fan... it's like a religion out here...
But, pay attention to Bryce Harper... that dude is the real deal.
I think in Toronto, on his birthday, he had a great game and one of the reporters asked him if he would celebrate by drinking (he's 20 yo)... and he responded with"That's a clown question bro!"
That was too awesome, and been rooting for him since then (except, of course, when he plays agains my Cards)

So, Saint Louis is up 2-1, and Washington doesn't have Strasburg... Are they in trouble?
As for the other series, Oakland and Detroit is pretty fun to watch, and we'll see how New York does tonight, though I am not too worried (depending on the outcome tonight)

I'm pretty sure the Cards have this in the bag...I doubt any team could come back from losing 4-12 and then 0-8 (at home no less) in a series.

With no Strasburg to shut down the Cards, this series is at least written in clay, and is waiting for the oven

Yeah... it's the "win expectancy" based on " leveraged events" per innings...
It's REALLY mathcentric and the fantasy leagues really digs this stuff...
So, when you look at the chart... the center line is the "neutral line"... aka, the score is tied. The line goes up and down based on what the teams did per inning.
