We are playing in a very unconventional tournament in Shanghai - and i say this because it isn't played over a day or two but over about a month or two. People play there games when they are available basically. There is a structure and it is typically single elimination.

This game is the 3rd round, prior to the semi finals - other details can be found in the tournament thread.

Right off the bat the Space Wolves have a tough time. Grey Knights only have 7 Kill Points while the space wolves have about 20. The Space Wolves will need to try and wipe out the entire Grey Knight Army, which, with only 20 models, may not be that tough considering the amount of plasma, melta, etc. the Space Wolves are packing...

GREY KNIGHT TURN 1

Coteaz casts the power to allow him and his squad to re-roll hits.

Basically, Grey Knights are waiting for the drop pods to come down - ideally scatter to within 12" of him and the entire squad will shoot at the contents and drop pod...


SPACE WOLVES TURN 1

5 Drop Pods come in:

The Space wolves do not want to deploy within 12" of the Grey Knights due to Coteaz's "I've Been Expecting You" rule.

No drop pods do land within the 12" bubble, but one does end up scattering off the table and a 1 is rolled on the mishap -

Storm Rave Comes in and blasts the tactical squad that came in last turn near the devestators

The bottom Dread Knight Jumps 12" also near the tactical squad

Paladins (4 left) Coteaz and Draigo go after the right most tactical squad

SPACE WOLVES TURN 3

Paladins had failed to charge the marines that were about 5 inches away (new rules for charging); the squad then was able to maneuver around to get a shot off at Coteaz with a plasma gun...

He fired .... "look out ....Never mind" Coteaz died to a plasma blast to the face. Coteaz already lost one wound to perils earlier

3 Drop Pods fail to come in on this turn.

Storm Raven turns and zooms up, shooting one of the Long Fang Squads, killing 3 of 6

Small paladin squad shoot holocaust and storm bolter at other one, preparing to charge

Two Dreadknights converge on the long fang squad that drop podded in on turn one; end up wiping them out in CC


Draigo and squad go after the remaining tactical squad and drop pod.

Draigo and squad go after Melta - okay, so Draigo is down to one wound... I want to shoot the hell out of the squad first, so cast holocaust from paladins, works fine...cast the flamer psychic power from Draigo (rarely ever use it); roll 6,6 and Draigo kills himself :(

GK: 16 KPs (including first blood and line breaker and warlord)

Space wolves: 6 (including line breaker and slay the warlord)



Although the game seems unbalanced, there were a few unlucky rolls for Zark, including the mishap of his drop pod, and his reserves coming in so late (then again, that is the risk of the drop pod army). A few points not mentioned in the report was 3 or 4 drop pods getting blown up.

I had a few good rolls, where my one paladin with one wound managed to survive the close combat with two squads basically.

Overall, an interesting game. Coteaz really was a huge deterent for the space wolves drop podding too close, but the new rules where they can move 6" after debarking helped them a lot.

I will move to semi finals, Zark will still play for a wild card spot.

Again, great game and great fun. I really though i would have gotten wasted as my model count was so low. In then end, I lost 14 of 19 models while he lost 77 marines and the drop pods. About a 5:1 kill ratio...not bad if i do say so myself...that is what Paladins should do... Very cinematic...

That Wolf list looks like it would be a serious pain to play, its Ld8 almost everywhere which isn't much fun with actual vehicle support (i.e you can't hide in transports). Usually SW Pod lists use Logan partially because he unlocks Wolf Guard (a few points more for +1 A and Ld) but he also gives you a big 'stay away' beatstick character. It wouldn't necessarily have helped that much against the Paladinstar, but it seems like the Wolves just got rolled up and eaten in combat and he certainly would have slowed them down and made the Dreadknights etc be more careful where they ran in.
