This issue came up in a game tonight. Had an assault with Hive Tyrant with Tyrant guard vs Wraith with Whip Coils and Lord with Mind shackle Scarabs (nasty little buggers) were the Necrons assaulted the Nids.

The Lord being closest moved first in to B2B with a Tyrant Guard then the Wraith moved to B2B with the Tyrant, so far so good. The problem came up as to which happens first checking for B2B for whips and scarabs or issue and accept Challenge? If B2B is first the Tyrant goes on I1 and the Guard gets Mind shackled, if it is Challenge first then B2B check the whips and scarabs the Tyrant goes on I5 but gets hit by the Mind shackles. Is there an order or is it up to the Players whose turn it is? I think this also effects things like Hypnotic Gaze and Lash Whips.

Already checked over PG 64 and I did not see anything in the FAQ's on this though I may have missed it.

The player who's turn it is (Necrons in this case) determines the order for things that happen at the same time, like MSS and challenges. So he would probably challenge then trigger. Big reason not to let Necrons charge you.

The FAQ also address the way whips work.

Page 44 – Canoptek Wraiths, Whip Coils.
Change the second paragraph to read “Any enemy model that is in base contact with a Canoptek Wraith with whip coils at the beginning of the Fight sub-phase counts their Initiative value as 1 until the end of the Assault phase, regardless of their actual Initiative.”

So that is up to the controlling player as well.

Hypnotic gaze is in the FAQ, it says that it can be used in the controlling players turn and after challenges are declared.
Page 62 – Hypnotic Gaze.
Change the first sentence of the second paragraph to read “This psychic power is used at the beginning of your Fight subphase, after any challenges have been issued and accepted or declined”.

So to summarize. Necron can choose to MSS or Challenge or have any models in BtB with a whip go to I1. They decide the order. Again, not good for Necrons to charge you.

Simple, don't put sarg or character in front. Then when they charge they will not be in B2B with them.Let them then decide the order in which things happen and you can decide if you want to risk it on your lord or your sarg.

Mess with the best, Die like the rest.

Thanks guys. First time I have had a Necronlord actually get in to assault with me since the new Codex. Those scarabs make me thing devoting a large brood rippers or stripped hormies to just tarpitting a lord are points well spent.

@jegsar I tried real hard not to let that happen. Almost worked to, he managed to slip through a gap another squad made.
