This came up tonight, there was a very large massive assault with one unit that had been assaulted by 3 units. Models from that single unit dwindled and left various other single model units piling in continuously trying to reach the fight. I know if a unit has multiple models the models that do not reach just cannot swing, but what if you pile in several turns in a row and still have not reached a model (due to models going down consecutively before you get there etc etc). Do you just continue to pile in until the opposing unit is destroyed/falls back or do you disengage at any point? Page numbers might help since I feel like I am missing something here.

If even after piling in at the end of the assault phase a unit won't be in base to base contact with any enemy models, then it disengages from the assault, consolidating instead.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

It's on Page 23 at the part starting with "When making Pile In moves, the player whose turn it is moves his unit first."

It then goes on to explain that a combat ends if there's no models in contact at the end of each initiative step

What if there are three units in combat Units 1, A and B. Unit 1 takes damage deals damage to B then takes damage from A. When B tries to pile in it fails to reach. A and 1 are still engaged however so combat doesn't end.

The two units that are still locked are still in combat, so their combat doesnt end.

If the 2nd units Initiative step pile in move can't make them reach to within 2" of a friendly model in base to base with an enemy the unit is no longer engaged.

Also, you no longer have to have a model in base to attack. If a model in Unit B is within 2" of an in-base model from Unit A; it can attack.

I believe you still need at least one model in the unit to be in base-to-base. Otherwise, the unit is not locked in combat, which you must be, in order to be engaged. If you have at least one model in the unit in base-to-base, then yes, you are correct.

Yes, you still need at least one model in BtB for the combat to continue.
