Subject: Advice for a dude entering bolt action?

So, my FLGS showed me theyre starting up bolt action, and, tempted by the dirt cheap WGF Germans box, I decided to start it up.
What i was wondering are there any specific rules I should follow decking out my infantry? Are there certain weapons that are really bad/good? I have several panzerfausts, mg 34's, sniper rifles, mp 42's and even mortars to use for my infantry. I also have some artillery and tanks from model kits I owned before, which include a stug III, a panzer IV, a tiger, a king tiger, an 88 flak gun, and a smaller gun that I believe is a pak 48 or something like that. The store is staying at small games, no more than a 1,000pts, so I dont have to field a massive force.
What would you recommend making? I was thinking a couple of infantry squads with an mg 34 and some panzershrecks, a colonel with a couple of bodyguards, a mg42 team, and a flak 88 as a rough force to start out with. Dont have the book yet, but read through it quite a bit at the store so I have a rough idea of points.
Also this can be just a germans in general thread. i'd love to learn as much as posible before my first game next sunday. The first goal i have is a 500pts list, and if you have a sample list i'd love to see how they're usually organized (dont need points totals.)

what theater are you playing in? time period? Are you trying to be true to the Nazi Order of battle? Also depends on What Germans are you fielding SS, Wehrmacht, or Fallschirmjäger?
You can't go wrong with an mp44 NCO and 9 kar98 soldiers.
Here is a tip until you play a few games, for Germans keep your machine guns out of your squads, invest in HMG teams atleast until you get the feel for the game. As for why, think about when you field a Imperial guard squad, your special weapons will hold you back because you'll want to fire them to full effect or you will lose the points you paid for them. In bolt action you can move and shoot but it does negatively affect your ability to hit.

Wehrmact. Really don't like the Nazi asthetic and would like to avoid that, so no SS, etc. I may expand into FallschimJager if I can find a good kit that has stg 44's in it though.
Built up a small 500pts army to try at the club with some snipers, a rifles squad with a couple of mg 34's, a couple of 6 man vet squads each armed with smg's and 2 panzerfausts, and a second LT with a bodyguard. Not the most diehard army I'm sure, but my store isn't super competitive so I should be fine.

The Wehrmacht means 'Armed Forces' and is the term used for all of them together - Kreigsmarine, Luftwaffe, Heer etc.
The German Army in WW2 was the Heer.

Yeah, Boltaction.net/WWPD is a really great site/network for WW2 gaming.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |
