So yesterday was the (famous?) Jon Steward - Bill O'Reilly debate.

It's 90 minutes long, so watch it if you dare. But I think both made some good points and lots of fun was had.

I love these guys. Reilly's actually pretty well spoken. Also damn Stewart's short.

Depressed thought: More people watched that then the actual debate.

Although to be fair, they probably talked about more stuff and answered more actual questions than the actual debate...

Stewart for president with Reilly as VP to balance the ticket?

I love at 1:09:10 or so, O'Reilly says British people's teeth are all falling out... "I lived there for a year, I know!" followed that.

I find that funny, because in a couple of medical magazine type articles that I read, in surveys and studies, researchers found that British people's teeth are actually HEALTHIER than Americans. The difference being that we Americans place so much emphasis on straight, perfectly white teeth, as opposed to overall health.

Overall, I did see that debate as being much better than the "real" ones that have been going on recently.

It was a very good debate, I would have preferred JS laid off so many gags, like the rising platform, and had a more serious debate, but he is a comedian after all.

O'Reilly was surprisingly likable and went up a few degrees in my estimation.

It was dramatically more engaging and better executed than the actual debate...

I am a Brit who has enjoyed socialised dental healthcare throughout my life, I don't have a filling, my teeth were fixed from a potential underbite (would have really made a good ork player then...) as a child and all my wisdom teeth are intact. I have bloody good teeth.

I currently live in central Pennsylvania, believe me, we Brits have far, far better teeth than the folks around here. The number of 'holey smiles' and tombstone grins I see here, including in young and healthy people, is ridiculous. I've also seen some wealthier folks around here with 'hollywood smiles' which are equally freakish, ice white teeth leaving me wondering if they glow under nightclub lights...

You were hoping a charity debate between a comedian and an entertainer would have been less comedic and entertaining?

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Tn my mind that's actually the problem, that it was comedic and entertaining... and still better addressed the issues then the actual debate featuring the actual candidates for president.

I always thought this was just an "acceptable stereotype" that originated from the 18th century, wherein everyone associated with the navy & merchant navy was suffering from scurvy. I had no idea that this had somehow become associated with state-funded dental care.

I love Stewart's humour, I just wanted the 'funny faces' and props like the elevating platform to be toned down a bit/not repeated 6+ times... More rapierlikewit and less custard pie.

Also, is O'Reilly calling himself an entertainer now instead of a journalist? I thought that was Lonesome Rhodes Beck's get out clause?

I think O'Reillys complaint about capitalism hurting this country with regards to news was one of the best statements of the night.

And it's 100% correct as well.

MGS as far as I know O'Reilly still says he's a journalist.

Actually, that part irked me slightly, not because of the 'Brits have bad teeth' thing, because that's well-worn banter territory to which we have our own (equally stereotypical) ripostes. No, the thing that annoyed me was his complete misrepresentation of the NHS, and this is something that isn't just limited to him - it seems to be a 'thing' amongst the US Right. He's a wealthy American, who says that he lived in the UK for a year and found the NHS to be below the standard of American healthcare. Well, duh. Of course if you're rich and American the standard of healthcare that you'd be used to would be higher than the NHS, because you're coming from a system in which the healthcare you receive is based upon your ability to pay for it, across the board, and you can afford the very best. That doesn't take into account the fact that the care the NHS provides is miles away from the standard that literally millions of ordinary working-class Americans can afford (i.e practically none at all). And, why do some Americans keep peddling the idea that NHS care is all there is in my country? Once and for all:

IT ISN'T. STOP SAYING THAT. IT ISN'T TRUE.

If you want to pay for a higher standard of healthcare in the UK, you can go private. If Mr. O'Reilly had done so, he would be telling a completely different story. Ah, but then that would hurt the nonsensical ultra-conservative agenda he's supposed to be peddling, wouldn't it? We can't have that, can we?

The rest of the debate was, by turns, dull and infantile. It's a shame really, because I quite like Stewart.

I found that some of the things he said during the debate would likely cause major outrage amongst his more diehard viewers, if they were watching. I felt that some of his statements led more towards the dreaded "liberal" side of things. It has definitely raised my respect for him (slightly)

As to the healthcare thing, I actually agree with many of the things both were saying... I mean, if Gov't intervention just will not work, why not use Stewart's suggestion and take military medical personnel to fill many of those "bureaucratic" positions, to get things rolling.

And of course their debate was better than "real" politicians debating. More Americans, especially the under 35 crowd get their actual political information from guys like O'Reilly and (especially) Stewart (and by extension, Colbert and other comedic pundits)

Actually, that was one of, if not the ONLY thing I took away from this debate. It's a really good idea. You have a lot of servicemen, some of which have medical experience, coming out of the military looking for work. Why not employ them in community clinics, paid for at federal level?

O'Reilly isn't an idiot, and more importantly he's from the old school of shock jocks, and their first rule is to know your audience. When the audience is a bunch of rightwingers looking to be outraged, well then O'Reilly tells them a bunch of nonsense about how hard done by they are and some scary new thing is going to be worse than anything that's ever happened before. When the audience has a significant number of leftwingers or is not particularly political, he jokes it up and is a lot more amiable in general. Even though their bread and butter is still giving the daily outrage to their loyal audience, the most talented of these shock jocks have a real charisma and are generally pretty quick on their feet and can still be engaging when not playing to their typical right wing audience.

This is in contrast to the new generation of shock jocks, who are focussed on remaining in character at all times, and who then build their success by being a more outrageous character than any of the others. Most of these folk are rarely seen out of character, and would probably be boring as flying rodent gak if they were.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
