There was a thread on this game nearly half a year ago (wow!) but it didn't get far. Legend of Grimrock (LoG) is a homage to old school dungeon crawlers! The plot is your characters have been convicted of (unnamed) crimes, sentenced to death, and pardoned by the king -- except that pardon entails being thrown into a dungeon anyway. You can enjoy your "innocence" if you manage to escape!

I just started playing on Normal difficulty and had a blast. I can't remember the last time I had this much fun with a PC game. I'm not very good with mouse+keyboard so I tend not to enjoy PC gaming but the first three levels of Grimrock sucked me in -- I had one of those "is it really 4AM???" moments that (probably should) become rarer and rarer as you get older. I couldn't help but think of my two hundred or so hours with Skyrim as I played LoG. Although I love Skyrim and think it's a true masterpiece, only one of its dungeon environments (Blackreach) drew me in to the extent as any of the first three levels of LoG. So I would heartily recommend this game to anyone who like RPGs, whether you prefer PC or console gaming, and especially to those who want a modern-looking and less clunky dungeon crawler that pines for "simpler times" (read: a meat grinder).

Okay, introductions aside, here is my first build:

Front Rank:
- Chlotrys the Human Fighter: Balanced Str, Dex, Vit (leaning Dex), Skilled, Evasion, Armor 4, Swords 3
- Wogulp the Lizardman Rogue: Max Dex, Rest Balancing Str,Vit, Fist Fighter, Evasion, Dodge 2, Unarmed 4
Back Rank
- Khalfa the Minotaur Rogue: Max Str, Rest in Vit, Headhunter, Skilled, Missile Weapons 4
- Chirp the Insectoid Mage: Max Will, Rest in Vit, Strong Mind, Skilled, Ice Magic 3, Spellcraft 3

So far, I've had ... quite a few deaths. But I chalk that up to my own inability to master the cowardly step-back-sidestep-hit-repeat tactic. Although I read a lot about how great Evasion is, I find that my Lizardman Rogue is usually the first down. I don't know if it was a mistake, but I also took two points of Fire Magic for Chirp because Fireburst is a one-rune spells and his casting cooldown is way too slow until you get 10 points in Spellcraft (and even then ...).

As for Tavern Talk: My closest call so far was running from a cavalcade of spiders with both front rankers already poisoned. I slew three of them with just a few HP to go, went into rest mode, got interrupted by a fourth, killed it and went back into rest mode, then got interrupted by a fifth! All this time, the poison had not yet healed, so poor Chlotrys and Wogulp were barely hanging on despite doing most of the work (Khalfa had long since run out of arrows and was reduced back to throwing rocks).

So how about you, Dakkanauts? What build are you using/builds have you used? Have you braved the random party generator yet? What kind of close calls have you had? Favorite loot? (Remember to use spoiler tags as appropriate!)

Back in the English morass

I had 2 fighters up front to soak up damage with a mage and a rogue behind to deal damage. Combat is mostly based around dodging though. I only got about half way in, I found a secret area where you were teleported (I think) into a large room where litterally every square was full of those little lizard things. I just kept dying and I havn't been back

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

I got into a similar situation last evening.

Spoiler:
Descending a secret staircase to the fourth level that I discovered at the end of my last session, I found a door to a room full of barred partitions patrolled by ravenous glowing slimes. The slimes could of course attack my party through the bars so I had to lure them down the passages toward the door, which was the only defensible position. The slimes were not only able to attack through the bars but were also individually tougher than anything I had yet fought. Their attacks give the diseased status, which means you don't heal HP (you can rest to eventually shrug it off and then regenerate you health).

It was a long, fretful process but the upshot was finding one of the games seven treasure items and getting a gem that opened a locked door when fixed in a gargoyle's mouth. Behind the door, I found two poison bombs, a crossbow (attack 20! but low speed) and five or six quarrels. In other words, it was well worth it!

Speaking of which, I love how much you treasure everything you find in the dungeon. I fought some poison-breathing fungus warriors last night after the slime incident described above and it took be a few re-loads to get it right. But when I finally did, I couldn't find five of my eight arrows. I nearly reloaded the game. I would have rather done that fight ten more times than tried to make headway with only three arrows.

Nothing to do with Grimlock the Dinobot I assume.

I hope that's not a joke about accents ...

No, absolutely not. I just noticed the similarity in names.

Although now I think about it I can see how that might have come across. Whoops! >.<

Although an RPG with Grimlock in it would be awesome.
