Hey Dakka Dakka community,
My name is Tom, and I'm an avid war-gamer and a decent painter by my own standards. I was hoping to get some clarification on my problem. I just recently bought some of the new citadel paints, and they are really not working for me. painting the guns of my dark angels has become a real problem because the paint so not cover the model well by any means. is anyone else having this problem? its happening with nearly all my paints at the moment. please help!!!

Tom, not sure what to tell you man, I used the switch over to the new paints as a fresh start and went Vallejo, P3 and Reaper.
If you don't have too much invested in the new line I'd recommend doing the same.

Can you better describe the problem? What paints are you specifically using? The new base? Layers?
And what primer are you painting over?
I heard the layers are rather diluted, and could be the cause of the poor coverage. But Im not entirely sure since I havent tried out the new range yet.

I've been using the new range, and really enjoying it to be honest. As mentioned the layer type paints do seem a bit thinner than they used to be, but still not thin enough and require a bit more done manually in my opinion.
What colour's specifically are you having trouble with?
Yellows, whites and reds notoriously have poor coverage compared to blue's and browns in practically any paint line.

I know they thinned a number of paints and called them "Layer paints" because selling people less paint and more water for the same price gives the entire GW corporate team massive pulseing boners.
You can try shakeing the bottle (with the top closed lol) to get the sediment off the bottom. I knowticed that with some of the metalics the particles seems to settle over time. You can try stirring it with a toothpick to get the clump at the bottom broken up (if there is one).
You can also try adding more layers of paint.
Or you could go with another company for your paint

Can't help you with the new citadel paints, other than to recommend you shift over to Vallejo, Reaper and P3 as mentioned above if you're not too heavily invested. Delivered to your door cheaper than buying the worse GW paints, Vallejo at least.
In general, if your paint is too thin you just need to apply several thin layers - which can end up looking better, but is more time consuming of course. Have you shaken the paints thoroughly? (I use a jigsaw / reciprocating saw to shake mine)

Specifically which colours? I've found the layer paints suck balls for coverage. The way the new paint range is designed is to use the base paints to get good coverage, then use layers to layer on the highlighting you want.
I have not been disappointed by the base paints at all, they all have vibrant colours (more so than the old foundation range) and cover as well as any other acrylics I've used before. The layers I've been less impressed with and have avoided for basically everything but times when I want a specific colour and know I don't need decent coverage.

even the new Imperial Primer paint yields bad results...and its black, so it shouldn't have this problem

Sadly like everything GW over the last few years it adheres to the 10 foot rule....(looks good from 10+ feet away, closer and you start to see the flaws). I know that doesn't really help your perdicamant. One question that hasn't been asked. I'd your having trouble even with the primer have you been washing your models befor applying the primer and paints?
