While playing with some friends in the weekend I stumbled upon a question regarding the way hull mounted weapons and sponsons on tanks shoot. The question was; do you work out LOS & LOF via the weapon itself, or do you (as I've seen in some batreps) work it out similar to the tank armor principle i.e. determining it's LOF by measuring diagonally from the corners.

In most scenarios we've been able to work out shooting from tanks without problems because of obvious LOF, but last time there was a dispute over the hull mounted lascannon of the leman russ. My friend claimed it was only able to shoot straight forward whilst I claimed it fell under this "standardized" model which would affect all tanks. By "standardized" I'm not saying it's the official way to do it, but the reason I stuck to the thought was that I felt it followed the general 40k rule-pattern; making it easier to resolve shooting. We eventually discovered that his units would regardless be in cover from mine so the question was dropped. I might have missed out some clause in the rule book and/or codex but for future reference what do you think is the right method?

Well, the lascannon is axis-mounted so it can be turned a few degrees to each side, but the real question is if the assembly is relevant when determining this? E.g. you measure LOF form the base of the model, not from the weapon itself.

Main rulebook, page 72 - "Additionally assume all hull-mounted weapons can swivel horizontally up to 45 degrees."
There's also a picture of a Leman Russ with all of it's weapons and fire arcs on that page.
