Subject: Ork Shooty Options I'm Considering

Looking to reforge my Orks into a thousand diceroll dakka menace, but have some options I could use some advice for:
1) HQ: 2 x SAGs, or SAG + Warphead? I really like both these options, more for their fun-factor and occasional horrendously violent capability. SAGs let me throw AP2 pieplates around which is great for cracking all comers but with some fairly hefty risks. Warpheads have some cool shooting options and are a bit cheaper.
2) Max Lootas, or maybe some Burnas? I can either go 3 units of Lootas, or 2 Lootas, 1 Burna Boyz mob. I like Burnas, I like 15 flamer templates and/or power weapons, but as I'm trying to design a more static list they don't exactly fit. They could still be capable anti-charge units with their d3 overwatch attacks, or useful for dislodging dug-in enemy troops around an objective.
3) To Deff Dread or not? I'd be looking more for it to be a big 90 point distraction with the potential to actually survive and start ripping things apart in CC. How have you faired running lone Deffdreads in your armies?
4) Heavy Support, so many choices. 3 batteries of Big Gunz seems like the most optimal choice; cheap, S8 anti-tank rounds, BS3.. but I also really like Boomguns, though realize they're insanely fragile. Another option are static bunker Battlewagons armed with 4 Big Shootas that can toss 12 S5 shots around the map, plus protection for a unit of Lootas.

HQ - Although 2 SAG would be pretty fun and have twice the chance to do crazy damage (and twice the chance of doing bad for you I guess) Id say stick with a either a warphead and KFF or SAG. If your going to horde a bit, that %+ KFF save still can save a lot of lives, though Im personally enjoying the SAG for some mad reason. The Warhead really comes into his own when you add a DAKKAjet or two to your list. Id suggest buying some or building them, because those things piss bullets normally, but on a WAAAGH! they are just incredible.
Elites - If your going static, Lootas hands down. If your adding a mix, Lootas and burnas need a ride from somewhere. But make sure you get Lootas first, they are always good, where as burnas are usually good.
Dreads - if you have 1, it will be a smoking crater most times before it gets anywhere. So you either need to hang it back and let boyz get shot up instead, or take more then 1 dread. But, this guy doesnt really fit in your shooty Ork build idea. They dont have good BS and not enough shots to really make it up. Kanz can be a decent walker if thats what your looking for, AND they have good enough BS to be of use other then a fire magnet
Heavies - Big Gunz are a treat now. So yes, youll want some. Boomguns are fun to bring and use and even build. But if the game really matters, Id leave it at home. Although, Ive thought of bringing 3 just for kicks. And a Gunwagon AKA Battlewagon with x4 bigshootas and a kannon, are badass. I take one fairly often and it usually does some impressive damage, definitely a mobile support unit that can also transport say....burnas?
My real question is, what do you have currently? And how many points are you thinking of playing at?

1500 points is really my comfort zone in terms of time and effort. 1250-1850 are OK too. What I have are some random odds and ends; ~70 Slugga Boyz, big Nobz mob, 20 Lootas, two SAG Mechs, couple of Trukks, a Battlewagon, Boomgun Wagon and a couple of Deffkoptas. But I'm not really concerned with that, I've pretty much made up my mind that I'm going to be rebuilding my army. Also I realized I kinda really hate moving around ~60+ Boyz every bloody turn as they swarm up the board. I'd really like a solid 100% shooty list with maybe just a couple units that I'd want to move on a regular basis.

1-) Depends on what else you take. If you take at least 2 units of Big Gunz or Lootas, 2 SAGs do well with them. But if you want Flash Gitz, Meganobz or large Shoota Boy squads, the Warphead is worth a try. I ran a SAG with a Warphead in a few friendly games where their combined randomness either single handedly won the game (notably once against BT where they destroyed more than 1000 pts combined, with the SAG rolling a Raargh direct hit and wiping out Grimaldus, his retinue, the EC and half a SB Terminator Squad) or failed so horribly they gave the army no chance to recover.
2-) Lootas all the way. Burnas are only good in a charging BW taking the enemy's attention off other BWs containing the Boyz, Nobz or Meganobz who'll do da proppa bashin'.
3-) Dreads rarely make it into combat if they charge, since they're so scary, but used defensively, they can help your list quite a bit. Just don't expect them to help your shooting a lot. If you take one or two, I would recommend getting two skorchas and having them wait just behind your line, ready to lash out and charge things that come too close to stab your shooty guys.
4-) Bunker BWs are horrible unless terrain heavily favors you, since the enemy can just shoot them from the side. And they love to explode, too! Either 3 units of 3 Kannons or if you're feeling lucky, 2 units of 3 Kannons and 1 unit of 3 Zzap gunz is a good choice, but I would advise against Looted Wagons in a static shooty army. They will be prime targets for enemy AT with no BWs charging up the board and cover saves won't save you for long.
I hope your army enjoys success, although in all honesty I wouldn't field a gunline Ork army if I were you.

Then invest in some battle wagons. You can then run 20 boyz in 1 opentopped BW very easily. The front of the BW is pretty rugged and since its open topped you can shoot every single boyz from said wagon. Then load the wagon itself with x4 bigshootas and a kannon (NOT A KILLKANNON! Those are utter junk) and presto, thats an incredibly shooty unit thats easy to move, has good range and can take a beating.
The rest of your army you can fill to your liking. But Lootas, big gunz and DAKKAjets are definitely at home in a shooty army.

Ork bikes are some of my favorite overlooked shooting. 3 TL S5 shots! Plus they bring there own cover. They'll take down flying MC, AV 10 fliers no problem, plus their mobility.
If you dakkajets, do the warphead! It may not be too consistent, but it's a blast! Drop him with 20 shoota boys, if he gets the deep strike you can plop 40 shots where needed. Otherwise go for the free WAAAGHH!
Dakka Jet gives 9 shots for the price of 4 bikes (12 shots) but comes on a flier, doubles shots with a waaagh and is S6. If you do go bikes use them for mobile shooting, not assault (unless they're nob bikers!)

They are heavy weapons so any movement makes them stop shooting usually, i.e. when not with a Megaarmour IC. Also try to not snap shoot them where possible and also the battlewagon is asking for half of them to die.
Lootas and kannons are the stable undercosted units.
They'll want an ADL with quadgun and some grots to man it.
The other suggestions above:
Dakkajets are more fun then anything. They are hard to shoot down and have reasonable firepower but st6 I find not high enough.
SAG are far too random, then I have no idea who to put them with.
Warpheads are fun and great with Dakkajets.
Looted wagons are not good for their points and even if they were cheaper I feel they are too unreliable even for orks.
Battlewagons, dread and kans are mech which actually happens to be an issue give the infantry nature of gun orks and also they are too many points in a weak model when set up to shoot stuff.
Flashgitz nearly work, they fail slightly in ever area.
The main question to ask is about troops. Some grots to man the quadgun, as it is a cheap weapon.
Trukk boyz could work but probably not that well. You'll want rocket buggies here.
Battlewagons would work, thought this will lead to a more short ranged army if it what you are looking for. You'll want rocket buggies here.
Large mobs of shootas boys with mek holding a kff, is probably the most solid choice.
Wazdakka and bikers is the one I am trying to get into. Having half the army behind the ADL getting a 4+ save and the rest driving around with their own 4+ save makes me happy. Also bikers are dead shooty, in fact their shooting nicely complements lootas and kannons, also they are mobile which is an excellent attribute to a mostly static army.

I agree with some of what you said.
How would the BW making an army short range be bad exactly? Shootas only shoot 18inches, meaning your pretty close anyways. And no, a BW is not a weak vehicle its a pretty rugged vehicle, and would certainly make any unit of foot sloggers that much better. Also the beauty of sticking lootas in a wagon, is that with the x4 bigshootas and a kannon, once the BW is in range, the lootas are definitely in range, it because one hell of a fire base. and in most cases, your pointing the front of the BW at what your shooting, so you shouldnt run into it being hit on the sides very often.
And, a snapshot volley from lootas is far better then none. Id rather move to get into range and be BS1 then sit there just out of range. I think that was kind of a silly argument there

or, if you want a da dakka waggon, you can take it with RPK, deffrolla, and 4x big shootas. Throw in 10 shoota boyz with a big shoota, and you've got an awful lot of dakka you can throw out at short range (thanks to it still staying open topped), and once you get into 18", you're in range to mangle stuff with a deffrolla.
For 200 points. Sort of expensive until you realise it's 4HP AV14 with 15 S5 and 18 S4 shots that can throw around S10 deffrolling. And it scores.

Don't discount Flash Gitz. Especially with Shootier and Moar Dakka, they can put the hurt on an awful lot, and most of that stuff isn't going to be getting Armour saves (nor Cover saves). With Blastas, even less of it will, and you have better damage chances against Vehicles as well.

I love my FlashGits, dont get me wrong, but they are STILL far to pricey to really be worth it. Like Ive said for years, if they were TL or BS3 then they would be worth it, but since they are neither, I wouldnt think of them for any kind of serious ass kicking outside of enjoying them on the field

I didn't say battlewagons were bad. Short ranged is more a choice of style, it depends on what you mean by shooty, short ranged ork shooting is pretty lethal with the advantage that orks can handle themselves in cc as well.
Moving lootas is never ideal, as you are cutting their fire power by half. If the battlewagon blows lootas will die by the bucket load. Battlewagons are not that hard, given side shots are easily available and most armies can deal with av12. It is true that it may just wreck and not cause injury to the lootas but you are putting all your eggs in one basket.

Your putting all your eggs in one basket if your taking 1 unit of lootas yes. And losing half your lootas is a risk many would take over them just sitting in the open. Sides its much easier to hide the sides of a BW, specially with how far the Deffgunz can shoot. Location location location comes to mind

Perhaps the nastiest way to use Lootas is 3 squads of 10 behind an Aegis Defense Line. Since they number ten strong, they are not fearless and can go to the ground, gaining a 2+ save. Keep in mind, they can still overwatch. The drop-off in fire power is worth having a 2+ to ranged attacks.
