So Chaos players,

how are you kitting out your characters to win those mandatory challenges against Necron Lords? I'm talking aspiring champions mostly as characters should be able to take care of themselves (assuming they pass that leadership check....)

So assuming you do pass that leadership check, how does an aspiring champion survive to kill that T5 warscythe with a 2+ save? Is he a write off and if so does the relative strength of necrons in the game at this point render loading up on champion gear beyond a combiweapon a bad idea?

Obviously beefy combat characters, MC's, etc should be able to crush a kitted out seargent but that's just it.... Lords are seargents....

Lords mostly, don't really expect a seargent to stand up to an HQ kitted for close combat

Most people arent taking the regular Lords often enough to worry about. The Lord with the minimum kit is 75 points which is how much a min squad of CSM before upgrades. A champion can take a pair of lightning claws and a combi-weapon for the 40 pts a Lord spends in wargear. That doesn't even include the res orb that most people take the lords for.

If you want to compare a Necron Lord with an Aspiring Champion spend 82 points in wargear on the champion, 52 if the lord doesn't take an orb.

Also I like how cheap it is to upgrade the Champion slightly. 11 pts and you get a combi-bolter and a chainaxe. Doesnt help against marines much but Xenos wont like that guy.

Speaking as a Necron player, my advice is that if you are worried about lords, if you don't have access to AP2 at initiative, go for something that generates a lot of wounds. That means weapons and wargear with high strength and a lot of attacks. If you are focusing on dealing with Lords only, I'd suggest a mace, as S6 makes it somewhat easier to generate wounds, and AP4 isn't going to matter. Never take an Axe against a Lord if you can avoid it. Necrons would be good in CC if it wasn't for their awful initiative, and vs I1 they will destroy anything that crosses their path.

Another thing you could try is just taking your Aspiring Champions bare-bones, no upgrades whatsoever. This is for a couple of reasons, the first is that MSS has a slightly better than 50% chance of passing against LD10, so taking a naked champion reduces the risk of having him inflict a ton of wounds on your unit (incidentally, another advantage of the Mace over a Sword is that if you do fail MSS, you still get your armour save against the champions attacks). Additionally, due to their low initiative, unless you are fighting a maxed out squad of warriors, Necrons are more likely to lose a combat than win it due to their low initiative, and if they get sweeped, well, goodbye lord. Basically, with a naked champion against a MSS/Weave/Scythe Lord, you are basically sacrificing him (although you might get lucky and get a wound past the 2+ save) so that the rest of your unit can hope to sweep the necrons during regular combat.
