Like the title says I'm new I haven't quite decided on a race to play either I play alot of strategy games such as sc2 I also enjoyed risk had alot of hero scape stuff but I was young and lost it like a moron.
Recently I've been watching Beat Matt Batrep and found my self interested in getting learning and playing this game I had also convinced a friend to get the stuff too, We agreed on not doing any thing mirror matched (Orks vs orks, IG vs IG ect.) Any help would be appreciated and I will help him learn from what I know, And I'm looking to make friends in the community just wondering if there is a team speak or anything for this?

Well, I'm not from Canada so sadly I won't be able to give you a game anytime soon but I'll pass on what advice I can, along with a fine welcome to dakka dakka and I hope you enjoy your stay.

Dependent on what armies you guys want to play, I would advise picking up the Dark Vengance starter set, as this will teach you the core rules of the game in some quite simple and fun scenarios. I was able to leave my copy of that set with two very young members at a local club I run and they were able to play through it all pretty much completely unaided and when it came to their next games there were only a few 'advanced' rules that stumped them (perfectly natural though).

Failing that, just head to your local GW and you should be able to play a demo game using their set probably with some help from their very friendly staff (GW staff are always super helpful/nice.)

If you don't fancy chaos or dark angels, then the best thing may be to grab a battleforce of the armies you want each, as in general these will help you build a good core of roughly equal size armies and then grab a copy of the main rulebook and just take it step at a time. Although if you are going to do things this way you may be better finding an experienced player or GW staff member to help out.

On army selection I generally find there are two ways to go about things, if you want to play this for the tactical/competitive aspect of the game then I'd put some study into the army you want to play as some aren't as competitive as others. However if you are doing this more as a 'hobby' for either fun, story or building/painting, then simply pick the army the calls out to you the most.

The best thing you can do though and I'd advise it to everyone, have fun. If you play it with friends, family, new people you meet or whatever, keep it simple and enjoy it.

Again welcome to the hobby and welcome to dakka dakka.

if you're more of a strategist you might prefer a more nuanced army like Eldar or Tau. With psychic becoming more important in 6th ed, Eldar are quite a smart choice. Beautiful models too.

Of course there are *many* other choices!

If you're looking for an army that you dig their background and their models, do some research!
This is a great place to start:
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Warhammer_40k_Wiki
Find an army that you like their theme, fluff, style, w/e makes you happy. Competitive armies rise and fall over the editions. If you pick an army you enjoy and can get into, that always stays!
Its why I've been playing Tau for years. They might not be that competitive, but I love me some Farsight!

Sinister Chaos Marine

Hi and Welcome to the 41st Millenium

Freytag93 is absolutely right. Pick an army you like the look of/ playstyle/ character. I started with Tau and while I like them I found that I love CHAOS

Seriously, if you are in this for fun then go for one you like even if people say it isn't good because there are always ways round that.

Good Luck

The new starter set would be great to go halves on with your friend, as it will have the mini rulebook and two good looking armies, if you both like either the chaos or dark angels, go for that as a start. If not, a battleforce is a good way to start an army.

Marines of any flavour are good to learn with as they are durable and play well, I would avoid Tau, Nids, Eldar, Dark Eldar and maybe even Daemons as they are quite hard to play with.

I agree with the general consensus that its always best to start with the current starter box, In this case it would be Dark Vengeance. Its a good value if only for the rulebook included.

After that, do some research, and find an army that you like the story of.

Realize, that painting is part of the hobby, but you can get alot done with a proper colored primer.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

Thanks for the advice I'll drop by and take a look at the dark vengeance set, Other than that I've been watching games I was looking at a few different armies such as chaos space marines guards man and necrons I noticed a small suddel difference between races I want something to suit a play style while being able to enjoy the fluff I had also done some research into 6th edition noticed there had been alliances added which made me alittle happy I understand the shooting moving and assault phases, Also I thought I'd let you know I am looking into as a hobby also so I won't do the annoying thing and show up with unpainted space marines vortex grenades and mass terminators, I how ever did want to go with an army that would allow minimum vehicle use and still allow me to break IG lines or any line for that matter, Also I'm from northern Alberta as I'm trying to answer as many questions as possible =)

No-one breaks IG lines... No-one..... jk .... if ur facing ig ur gunna want stuff like Assault marines in order to get into CC quickly..... Getting quickly into CC with Ig is the best way to take it out IMO, cause we dont have anything to counteract CC besides trying to kill things before they get to us (flamer overwatch FTW)

Well I've taken interest in IG but I soon realized that in order to gain any advantage over the enemy you'd need tanks and walkers do to the guards week infantry or so it seems from what I've read and witnessed can any one shed some light on the tactics?

You really don't NEED tanks or walkers (our only walkers being Sentinels and...im not a fan...). There are infantry only army builds possible, but that usually comes down into spaming them with more infantry than they have bullets. If that's not your cup of tea, there is always the ever so popular Mech build (which is infantry placed in APC's supported by fliers or arty). Or you can play Armor.

That's why I love the IG. There are so many ways to play them, and all are pretty effective. And of course there aren't a lot of builds that WONT benefit from a Russ or a Vendetta or two...

I was reading Wiki
I think I'm going to play the IG style then find my self the commanders of butt rape to fit well with the army =)

By that I mean do a blob style and pick those commanders that just troll the enemy so I can learn to be effective and annoying

Also wondering about necrons they looked interesting and hard to kill at times I was wondering if they'd do any good?

It depends on what you want to do with your army, i collect Tau which are epic at shooting but to back up the rubbish at hand to hand combat i get specialised eldar aspect squads to help
