Subject: Necrons - Veil of Darkness & Reanimation Protocol Counters

Quick question, a cryptek attached to a group of necron warriors uses veil of darkness to jump to my side of the map, glances a vehicle to death. In my turn I reply by shooting all but 2 warriors and the cryptek to bits, the squad gains 8 reanimation counters...
In his turn he uses veil of darkness to jump his cryptek and the remainder of the warrior squad out of harms way.
Now the question is, does this squad retain its 8 reanimation counters or do they disappear after using the veil of darkness?
The fluff says that when failing morale they abandon broken/wounded necrons, wouldn't the same apply to veil of darkness? Does the cryptek "teleport"dead necrons to the new location?
Thanks for any light on this subject!

At the end of your shooting phase, he would roll for RP and those that get up, get up. So, in this example, there won't be any counters when he uses VOD, because he has already rolled for them.
You roll for RP at the end of each phase, but I could picture a situation where the Necron guy lost a few models during his movement phase, but before he had moved his warriors. In that situation, the warriors that pass their RP roll would come back in coherency with their squad, because that's what the rule says.

The RP counters (not EW) are placed on the unit, so they are actually part of the unit. So if the unit VODs then the counters go with it.

The counters stay with the unit, but as stated above RP rolls are made at the end of each phase - so the downed warriors who stood up at the end of your shooting phase would be on the table and go with the cryptek, while the ones who failed would not return. No counters would be left next to the unit by the time the Necron movement phase rolled around.

I'm still trying to think of a situation where the warriors or whatever squad would suffer casualties before moving and be allowed to veil before making RP...

Tank shocking necrons into dangerous terrain comes to mind.

That's not on your (necron players) turn though.
And if you mean them teleporting out of the DT, then they'd still take the test after moving, not before.

Preliminary Bombardment (page 366), Lightning Storm, (page 367), Volcanic Eruption (page 367), Seismic Cataclysm (page 367)..
All of them happen before you move and none prevent you from moving. They're not normal by any means, but they're possible

Soulblaze.
Happens at the end of each turn, so the next available Reanimation check would be the end of the movement phase.

End of turn is synonymous with end of the assault phase, isn't it? So wouldn't you check for Soulblaze before rolling RP?

Hmm.. maybe.
I would have assumed it would be after the assault phases RP checks.
Do things that happen at the start of the turn count as part of the Movement Phase, or Pre-Movement Phase.

Oh ya, the special board rules or whatever they are called...forgot about those. That would do it! Automatically Appended Next Post: rigeld2 wrote: grendel083 wrote:Soulblaze.

No, because if you have something happens at the end of assault and something that happens at the end of the turn then the turn is not over until the previous action has been completed. "At the end" does not mean after it has ended, it is the last thing to do in that phase. So, RP rolls are technically made in the assault phase. End of turn MUST be after assault has ended.

Wowowow, hold on... are you telling me that a necron squad does not retain those counters throughout the game? I (we) were under the impression that they would stay with the squad and that at the end of every turn he could role for them...
So basically, I kill 4 necrons in my shooting phase... he gets 4 counters, shooting phase ends, he gets 4 dice for reanimation protocol, let's assume 2 come back. The other 2 that were not reanimated don't get up anymore? Never? Dead forever? Gone?
And by stating getting a role every "phase" means that if I kill some in shooting he gets to throw dice for reanimation at the end of the shooting phase and he gets to do it again if he would for example suffer casualties in the assault phase?
We just started playing warhammer 40k and this was our 3rd serious game... I'm glad people here are so forthcoming to help, sometimes the ammount of rules is a bit overbearing...

It's all in the rules for RP and EL...But yes, he gets one attempt for each counter. The same guy could come back many times however.

Once you roll for an EL or RP, that token is removed. ( pg 29 of codex). Those models that succeeded the roll return to play, those that didn't never come back.

A Necron army with Ork allies (or the reverse) could have RP counters on the Warriors during its own movement phase due to a badly rolled scatter from an Ork Blitza-Bommer bomming run.
Obscure? Yes, but possible.
Any flyer with bombs and bad aim could do it, but Orks just seem more likely.
