So I'm in the market for a Dark Apostle to lead my cultists. I like the GW model alright, but I already have entirely too many DV Chosen, and I think the Aspiring Champion would make good conversion fodder. For those not in the know, he's this guy:

I'm looking for any advice to turn him into a Dark Apostle. I'd like to keep the skull helm he's holding, whether I could cut that out and put that on his head or not. I'm just curious if other people have taken this route for converting one up and I'd love to see what ideas they've come up with.

Draznicht definitely looks like the best starting point for an apostle, what with the commanding stance and all. I was thinking of doing the same thing.

My own plan is pretty simple; swap out his backpack, give him a bunch of GS parchment strips, hang a book from his belt and swap the head of his mace out for something suitably crozius-ish.

Seen the latter done recently, actually, can't remember where though. Someone swapped the mace head for the skull-and-star that comes in the CSM kit, I think it was here on Dakka. Looked good, anyway.

e; here is is! http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/10/9/419457_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Dark%20Chaplain%2C%20Word%20Bearers.png Can't remember whose mini it is, though.

Ooh! That seems like a good start! I haven't actually built the Vanilla CSM models really, since all mine were mostly made from the Iron Warriors conversion bits. That's definitely a good bit for the crozius head though.
