The campaign, that is, not the overall concept--Chaos still won just by sending 30000 innocent Marines to fight a pointless war.

I mean, 30 chapters going into the Eye of Terror for 800 whole years, and half surviving and returning? It's interesting to see that there's a list of 28 or so chapters, with their CSM post-corruption names listed, but the timeline says "a few" turn renegade and survive. It's not really very clear why--maybe the fallen from the chapters that aren't specified to have awful things happen to them (like the Sentinals) still had a -few- of their weaker willed brothers turn, and some of the heretic chapter names listed are just small warbands of 10 or so marines. Either way, I imagine with 30000 marines going in, and 15000 coming out, that the loyalist marines were able to kill more than they added to the Eye's compliment of CSMs over 800 whole years. I'd imagine of the 15000 lost, the majority of them were just killed outright.

Chaos won that one wholeheartedly. 30 chapters decimated; some swallowed whole. Others reduced to less than half strength. Which was a death sentence considering their home worlds were in some cases overrun by chaos.

Regarding the 800 years, that was Imperium time. There was no indication about how much time had subjectively passed for those that went in. It might have only been 50, or even 5 years to them.

Either way that doesn't mean they were effective. Rather it just means those marines finally had enough and left.

Also it doesn't exactly say they were fighting CSM the whole time. Might have been years between CSM sightings while they hooked up with Draigo and took on regular daemons.. The warp is full of those.

I find the whole idea of the Abyssal Crusade very interesting.

Clively makes a good point that as time flows differently in the warp it might have been 800 years, 8 hours or 8000 years.

I don't think the Marines would have abandoned the job, it's not what Marines do, those that turned renegade yeah granted, but the ones that left the Eye, I think they would have achieved some of their aims.

Actually, wow, they have fluffed it out a lot haven't they! I didn't know they had done this in the new Chaos codex, colour me excited.

From the article on Lexicanum it sounds like Clively is right, the Imperium got a sound pasting and seemed to have been amazingly counter productive 30 Chapters sent in only for the majority to turn rogue.

But damn, those Vorpal Swords sound badass.

Awwww, there's a Blood Lords warband now, that were mine guys I wish they didn't name all 30 Chapters as well as my Chaos Warband had emerged from one of the Chapters that took part
