I have recently been inspired to create a fan codex for the Chapter I have been painting and creating for the last decade. In doing the research I have discovered something I would like to get advice on.

My Chapter name has always been the Midnight Suns and I have posted many pictures of them here and elsewhere. My gallery profile is here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/gallery-user.jsp?u=12389

In reading through various sources including the 6th Edition Rule book I discovered a Chaos Warband named the Sons of Midnight. Now... the names are different, but would you guys recommend changing the name of my Chapter to avoid any confusion or lesser intelligent people thinking I am unoriginal?

My models all have the same Chapter symbol:



which is where I got my inspiration.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

hmmmm.... Are the Sons of Midnight from a legion already?

The Sons of Midnight (per the 6th Ed. Rulebook and Chaos Marines Codex) were orignially known as the Star Gryphons until during the Abyssal Crusade around M38 where they became corrupted by the Eye of Terror becoming the Sons of Midnight.

Same symbol and everything?

I cannot find a listing of Chapter symbol, colors, or any indepth details on them except the small blurb about their original name, their new name, and that they were corrupted like they were.

I wouldn't worry about it.

You're guys are obviously Codex: Space Marines, not many people will pick up on Sons of Midnight from the 6th edition rulebook, anyway. I read through that section and I certainly don't remember them.

Keep your guys Midnight Sons if you like that name.

That is a good thought... I am just rather OCD and since I have gone to this much trouble to research things and create my own, I want to be clear for myself as well as any others who ask that I am not just copying and changing something that GW came out with.

I don't think anyone will accuse you of such. Hell there are dozens of GW official chapters that have fairly similar names, I mean how many variations of fists do we have?

Imperial, Crimson, Purple, Rainbow, etc.

Thank you for your input... I will continue along with my fan-codex, lol... and be uploading better quality and newer pictures of repaints/repairs and new units.

On a side note is there anywhere I would post my codex when it is finished to get opinions?

I have been getting a lot of support to keep the name and iconography and I wanted to thank everyone for their help.

I have been also directed to Bolter and Chainsword to release my dex when it is completed so I believe I will do that as well as on here.
