Subject: Query about the precision shot rule

I used some scout snipers for the first time today (I actually quite like them!)
I made a few 6's over the game, which I believe is the precision shot so I can pick whoever I want to hit, as long as they're in range?
(I didn't know this in the game, I was told that a precision shot killed the nearest model)
Anyway, is the precision shot affected by cover and/or line of sight?
I can't find it in the codex (page 63) just that it ignores the typical wound allocation
Thanks in advance!

You can choose who to allocate the wound to not the hit, it does not ignore LOS/range issues.
Thus, you should roll your precision shots separately from your other to-wound rolls then you get to allocate them following the standard rules for allocating wounds. Your opponent still gets cover if cover is granted and you can't allocate to out-of-sight models, as normal.

I had 30 cultists to shoot at, but could see 10 of them, even though they were all in range - going off what it says in the rule book, I could choose anyone in the unit even though I can only see 10?

Don't you get precision shots on a roll of 6? So after rolling to see if I hit, any dice that are 4+ wound but on a 6 are precision shots?

And I'm über new, this was my fourth game ever tonight lol

You're still constrained by the Out Of Sight rule on p16.

For Sniper shots, yes, 6s are Precision Shots (unless they are Snap Shots). Also, characters (eg, squad sargeants) get Precision Shot on a to hit roll of 6 (not Snap Shots).

Yes, 6's to hit are precision shots but you choose to allocate the wounds. Hits aren't allocated (as you said in your original post, that's the only reason I pointed it out).
Basically that makes it so you're still wounding against majority toughness (which doesn't matter for snipers but does for characters), so if you decide to allocate to an MC, you're not bound to his T6 specifically (thus probably allowing you to wound on a lower number). Again, not a big deal for snipers, but definitely a big deal for characters.

Not sure the others picked up on your wording here - this is incorrect.
Precision shots are on a * TO HIT* roll of a 6 - not to wound as well.

Sorry for sounding thick, but how does Precision Shot work?
The way we played it on Thursday was that I rolled to hit, and then rolled to wound - anything that was 4 or 5 counted as a wound, and a 6 counted as a precision shot?

It is on the to-hit roll
A 6 to hit from sniper / characters is a precision shot; if it wounds then you choose where the wound is allocated.
