Recently at my local wargaming hub, one of my opponents brought forth an Ultramarines painted Captain from the AOBR set. He claimed that his Captain was Cato Sicarius (it was kustomized with a plasma pistol in place of the models original bolter) as so "clearly" stated in the lore section of the 5th Edition rulebook. At first I protested, until he showed me his "proof." In the lore section of the 5th edition rulebook (pg. 137) the fluff states that the Ultramarines second company attacked WAAAGH! Zanzag at Ghospora Hive during the Assault on Blackreach. The Ultramarines company sent to battle the WAAAGH! was led by Captain Cato SIcarius. My opponent then pointed out that he bought an Assault on Blackreach set, and thus according to the lore, his kustomed AOBR Captain was Cato Sicarius. Reluctantly, I accepted his "proof" as I did not have the effort nor the time to argue with him. So since then, I've been wondering if what he did is legitimate (I need to get back at him for beating me ).

If he wants to pay the points/customise the model/just flat declare that he's Cato, that's fine by me.

It works the same i reverse.

The real Vulkan He'stan isn't an ultramarine, an imperial fist etc. I've seen many many non-salamander Vulkans

You're taking the game a mite too seriously if you demand proof that a character was in a particular place to be legal to be in someone's army, IMO, but you're entitled to your opinion.

I run Ghazzy with my Orks sometimes. Doesn't mean that every battle i fight is on Armageddon

Just because a model is in production doesn't mean you have to use it. If its equipped properly and roughly the same shape and size, its fine.

WYSIWYG is the hardest I'd ever judge, so as long as the model is geared appropriately it's all gravy

I guess you guys are right. Maybe I am taking it too seriously. Time to customize me a Ghazghkull from my AOBR warboss!

Mega-armour isn't that easy to cobble up, but it can be done well

Go for it. As long as all the options and weapons are WYSIWYG you should be fine.

If you plan on running it in tourneys you can always take it to a TO before hand to get definitive approval. All my special characters are conversions and I've never had a problem at a tourney.

It could be a challenge, but i have some experience with converting. I used Tyranid chitin plates for some of my 'ard boyz bits...
Just another quick question. Is WYSIWYG in the 6th edition rulebook? I can't seem to find it anywhere (perhaps I'm blind?).

Haha, me in tourneys. I'm pretty bad as it is. I'm still figuring out how to beat Tervie spam at 500 points.

They have characters that have died in the lore able to be fielded in the game.

There is no rule requiring the official models to be used, as long as the model is a Citadel model, and has the correct wargear it is good to go.

I would not have had a problem with his conversion, and I suspect many people would be fine with it.

Bottom line: Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Actually i can't recall reading WYSIWYG in the new rule book either. I'll check when I get it back from my friend, however it is a general convention for most and also required for most tournaments even if it's not specified in the rule book.

For friendly games many people are fine with proxies i.e. this mt. dew bottle is a drop pod kind of thing. It allows people to try out new things without having to drop money on something that may not work for them.

That wouldn't fly in most GW tourneys. Some FLGS are a little more lenient and take the "hey it's a game" attitude. One I played in allowed a guy to put a post it note on a rhino with the word "vindicator" sharpied on it to proxy as a vindi. YMMV.

I know you took a softer stance down the thread, but just so you know, if you were to NOT allow this model, it would have been you braking a written rule of 40k, not your opponent.

Even if it's a little different in size it can usually be ok. I have a converted dante that has astoraths jump pack, he's about 1.5-2 times the height and his wings could obscure LOS but nobody has ever cared about that. My Calgar is the body and arms of the metal model stuck on a cleaved OOP GK terminator, it sits a little lower then the GW model due to the stance. I also have an arjak model that predates the finecast release that people seem to prefer to the GW model(maybe I'm modelling for disadvantage).

When it comes to characters most people won't care or say boo if the model is the right proportions. A Calgar made from plastic SM terminator parts, Lukas the trickster made from SW pack bits, a converted lucius the eternal using some sanguinary guard pieces or most of the mad conversions for SM should be fine.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

I agree as long as the model has the wargear it can be whoever you want it to be, and no need to use the actual model, there are some horrible models out there of good characters like abaddon, the black crusade dwarf
