Hi! Trying to build a list for my friend who is starting 40k, themed around Salamanders and is a little fluffy, but can win most of the time.

HQ
Vulkan

Troops
10 Tacticals w/ MM and Flamer, Combi-Melta and PF on sarge in a Rhino

10 Tacticals w/ MM and Flamer, Combi-Melta and PF on sarge in a Drop Pod w/ Beacon (Vulkan goes here)

Fast Attack
Land Speeder with dual MM (deep strike reserve)
Stormtalon with Typhoon Missile Launcher

Heavy Support
Whirlwind

Clocks in right at 1000.

Pod drops in the middle of the enemy, combat squads so Vulkan and the flamer wipe the nastiest infantry it can and the MM and combi-melta try to pop a hard target.

Beacon allows the Landspeeder to precision deep strike in and pop a hard target (or cause the opponent to waste a bunch of shots on the pod to prevent this)

Rhino moves up through the confusion while the whirlwind and Stormtalon clean up the rest.

He has all needed models for this list currently except the drop pod. All comments, criticism and advice is welcome and needed!

I don't drop my sallies yet, but I don't think you can squeeze vukan into that pod.

Most of the more experienced C:SM players with whom I've looked to for advice say "all drop" or "no drop."

Seems like the Stormtalon has not worked out well, judging from the talk on line. Mine is still on the assembly line and I've not played with it yet.

No advice on the Whirlwind. What's it's range?

It seems like you're light on Melta and Flamers for a Vulkan list unless the Whirlwind has some burning options?

Looks like a "fun" list but maybe not comptetive.

Interested to hear how it works out.

I'd drop the whirlwind, quite frankly they're worthless. C:SM drop pods have a 12 man capacity so you're fine there (I run my tactical squad with Vulkan pretty much the same way). I'd give the Sgt. in the other Tactical squad a power sword rather than a PF, as the only character in the unit, he will likely get killed before striking if a challenge is issued. I'd also advise against deepstriking your land speeder. Put it on the board from the word go, you want it to rush up, fire it's MM and blast the scariest tank on the table right the heck off. This means we don't need the locator beacon on the drop pod either. All these changes give you about 100 pts. back to spend on other stuff, maybe a Thunderfire cannon?

The whirlwind is not worthless, it has a role which is limited and you can not afford to bring it at low points but it can play its part well. Here, yes, the whirlwind is worthless.
1000 points is really bad for space marines, especially if you want an expensive HQ.

Whilst I do not believe you need to go full drop pod or none, to make this work you'll want to go full drop pod or none.
As you want tonnes of meltas and flamers to make up for an expensive HQ.
I have already on here given the two options I think can make use of Vulkan at around 1000 points so I shall not repeat myself. It is to do with how you need to transport Vulkan I would either drop pod or take 5 assault marines in a rhino.

Just spam attack bikes and HF/HF land speeders they are cheap but deadly. MM are going to have to shoot down flyers for you.
HF/HF land speeder will be a good whirlwind by the way. Also why deep strike the MM landspeeder?
