Hey guys, I know alot of people are tired of these kinds of threads. However, I just recently was given a serious incentive to getting back into Warhammer.
So, I was curious, can ya'll help me make a decision between Nids and Necrons? I love the look and lore of both of them. Just wanted to get ya'lls opinion

I think both armies are very good choices, and have a strong Codex currently. I can't speak very much to the strengths of Nids, since Necrons are my first/only army so far. But I can say this:

Nids have some powerful gun units, I think they're called hiveguard. They're dangerous versus some vehicles.
Nids are very strong in assault.
Big Nids can poop out tons of little Nids.

For Necrons:

Necrons do poorly in assault due to their slow init. Versus decent assaulters, Necrons will usually lose assault combat.
Necrons can get back up after they die. Augment a unit with an Overlord carrying a Res Orb and the orb can pay for itself several times over.
Necrons have good flyers that deep strike.
Necrons troop choices aren't very customizable.
Necrons have some cool tricks they can throw into the game via Crypteks.

Hmm, this post probably isn't as helpful as I thought.

I would think about the modeling/painting big time. Tyranids have a lot more options but will also take a lot more time. Not near as much you can do with Necrons but they will paint far faster. How much do you lik/dislike painting?

Also, what's your local meta? You can be that awesome guy that fills in an army gap instead of playing yet another of a saturated army in your meta.

If you go Tyranid, swing by the Tyranid Hive!

I actually thoroughly enjoy painting. To me it's half the fun of the fun. My local meta is actually very balanced, just about every army is represented by at least one person. Necrons are played a bit and nids are a bit more common. That did help a little bit guys.

I would go with Necrons.

If there are more players in your group playing Tyranids than Necrons keep the group balanced.

Necrons have plenty of units these days to keep painting from becoming monotonus.

You'll also be buying an army that has a newly fleshed out background. And most of the units won't change anytime soon.

Tyranids have a habit of being one of those armies that requires you to switch up everything when ever their new codex comes out.

I am really just interested in their playstyle differences. I know they're different, i just don't know how really.

I've never played necrons, so sorry for my ignorance about them.
Nids tend to be played a couple of ways.
1) Swarms of little guys backed up by big synapse creatures. Huge swarms of 20-30 termaguants and hormagants. Usually the tactics are massed rush across the battlefield and tons of shooting once you get to your opponent.
2) Tons of MC charging across the battle field. Think big'ins such as flying Hive tyrants, Trygons, Tyranofexs, etc. This usually also includes 2-3 min squads of 10 terms in order to use tervigons as troops. Tactis are get most of your MCs into CC, but you can do some shooting as well (usually with the Tyanofexs).
3) Lots of Mycetic Spores dropping down all over your opponents lines with infltrating units. Includes Zoanthropes, single unit carnifexs, and other medium to large models dropping in while genestealers pop up. This style takes a lot of careful planning and timing of the waves so that your units dont just get shot down 1 at a time.

Necrons are one of the most balanced and competitive armies. Necrons are known for being a high volume shooty army that can deal lots of wounds to infantry with tesla weapons and glance even the toughest vehicles to death with gauss weaponry. Their is a conception about Necrons being relatively bad in CC but this is not entirely true. Mindshackle scarabs and Warscythes are extremely good in CC. Challenges highly favor Necron characters with MSS. Flyers are pretty good; if you didn't know already. Overall Necrons are pretty good you can build however you want and still do well regardless of your matchup. Painting Necrons is also relatively easy, if your into that.

On the other hand, if you like Psykers it's the Tyranids that have them. They were pretty nasty to begin with and got boosted to insanity with 6th edition and the chance to take powers from the rulebook. A mate tested a small list with 2 Tervigons that both picked Biomancy powers... absolute nightmare. The critters kept on spawning gaunts every round and just wouldn't go down - one had Life Leech (PSA that gives it a wound back if it caused one) and the other had the power that gave it Feel No Pain, It Will Not Die and Relentless. As I said, nightmare.
