Hi

Been looking around at a number of games that look interesting and wondered which rule books I need for Malifaux

I want all the books that are current, including expansions.

Please could you confirm if my investigations are correct and they are in the right order.

I'm going to link to a few sites to make sure they are the right versions, dont want to get caught out.

Core Rule book - http://www.trolltrader.co.uk/malifaux-core-rulebook-4625-p.asp does this one contain the most recent rules plus fluff or should I get the hand book http://www.trolltrader.co.uk/malifaux-rules-handbook-4629-p.asp. I'd rather pay more and have a nice book if contains everything.

Rising Powers (new masters and henchmen) - http://www.trolltrader.co.uk/malifaux-expansion-rulebook-rising-powers-4626-p.asp

Twisting Fates (rules for avatars) - http://www.trolltrader.co.uk/malifaux-twisting-fates-expansion-rulebook-4733-p.asp

Storm of Shadows (no idea what's in this one) - http://www.coolstuffinc.com/main_miniatures.php?fpid=mini-WYR6019

Thanks

If you want the basic books, then you'll want the following:

Malifaux Core Rulebook 1.5 - This book contains all of the basic rules of the game, updated with the errata that has come out since the original book's release.
http://www.miniaturemarket.com/wyr6018.html

Rising Powers - This book contains some more scenarios, as well as new masters and the henchmen for each faction (As well as more minions, totems, etc...)
http://www.miniaturemarket.com/malifaux-rising-powers-rulebook.html

Twisting Fates - This book contains the rules for Avatars for all of the Masters, as well as some new minions. There are no new masters in this book
http://www.miniaturemarket.com/wyr6015.html

Storm of Shadows - This book is the rules for the new 10 Thunders faction and the dual faction models. There are 5 new masters (1 for 10 Thunders and 1 for Ressers, Guild, Arcanists, and Neverborn). There are also new minions and totems, and new schemes for the new masters.

If you just want the rules to the game, then this is the book you want:

Rules Manual - Contains the rules that are in Malifaux 1.5 for the most part.
http://www.miniaturemarket.com/malifaux-rules-manual.html

Edit: Your links are correct with the exception of the first. The first rulebook is the only one to be revised.

For the most part, you don't need the large rulebooks to play the game. The "Rules Manual" above is great for all the rules you need.

But you noted that you simply want all the books; Alfndrate's description is spot-on. The big difference between the four books and the "Rules Manual" is that the books themselves contain art, stories, lore, and full unit stats for all the models/units released at that time. Each unit also has about 0.5-2 pages dedicated to a description, lore, and art in addition to the stats you'd find reprinted on the cards.

For all intents and purposes, the large books have all you need. The "Rules Manual" is identical to the mini-rulebooks you find in 40k boxed sets - it's the core rules with all the cool lore and such taken out.

Cool thanks for the help I finally tracked down a webstore in the UK that is selling version 1.5, all the others had the one I linked to above which is a bit odd.

I have a number of games I'm looking into, deciding on which one to start first now is going to be the next hardest step

Just to verify, are you looking to get into the game all at once by buying all the source material, or are you looking to just play?

The rules for Malifaux are available here (no lore):
http://www.malifaux.com/Rules.php

Additionally, I notice you posted a similar thread in the Infinity section. I play both, and if you want a gameplay rundown, I posted it here a while back:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/465569.page
They're both great games and I don't want to choose between them. They're skirmish-small enough for you to comfortably play both.

Thanks Absolutionis that was a good read.

I'm currently looking into the below games, sadly my local area isnt great, no LGS and the only club is on a weak night (and is a bit too far out) and they only play GW games. I have lots of local 40k tournaments but may end up playing all of the below against myself (my aim is too grow a nice split personality)

Malifaux
Infinity
Flames of War
Hordes/Warmachine
Freebooters Fate
Dropzone Commander
Warhammer Fantasy Battle

I think WFB is the most popular after 40k for tournaments in my area but I'm not sure I want to paint lots of rank and file.

Malifaux is a great system that offers a very different take on competitive (vs. RP) gaming, in that there are very different ways to win, and just killing everyone is rarely the best solution. The nature of the game makes it fairly difficult to run a tournament that isn't just the highest end pieces, though (even more so than many systems).

WM/H have a very tight rules set, but even more than 3rd edition 40k's "just kill everything" win condition, the PP line suffers from killing your opponent as the end-all win condition, which almost every game devolves into, especially when it's time based.

can't comment on the others...
