As best I can tell from searching the internet, the only difference was minor... why, then, does Battlefront make different boxes? Is there some difference in equipment that I'm missing?

From my bit of research, I tend to see SS uniforms are usually black or grey (the Heer uniforms were actually more green that grey, despite the "Movie Nazi" all grey everything) and look more....dress uniform than the Heer which was more of a field uniform. Towards late war however, they started looking really similar as resources dwindled....

When looking at BF minis the Waffen SS smocks are usually the most striking piece of equipment, which is almost non-existent on Heer Panzergrenadiers (although IMO there are a couple of minis which might pass to be in kind of smock there as well).

Looking to trade away 15mm Forged in Battle Pumas (still in the box).

I think the biggest difference between the sets is SS have camo-smocks and helmet-covers whereas Heer have neither. I'm pretty sure the SS box has more MG teams as well.

Actually Heer have both smocks and camo helmet covers in a variety of camo designs.

Although the Waffen-SS used them first, the Heer copied them and issued their own.

So in 15mm you could use SS as Heer troops if you paint them in the right camo.

Waffen SS combat uniforms could also be in Field Grey as well as the 'Mouse' Grey often seen.

I know they existed, they just don't seem to be represented in the Heer sets. I was just pointing out the main differences in the box sets.

My SS have mismatched camo befitting a desperate and bloodied yet still motivated elite. Feldgrau, Oakleaf and Peadot scattered throughout the platoons.

Actually some minis from Late War Panzergrenadier platoon blister have helmet covers modeled on them.

In mid war generally only SS units used camouflage whilst the Heer units where stuck with field grey. By the end of the war however the differences where almost nonexistent, camouflage smocks being available to most units.

Even though battlefront produce separate late war Grenadiers, Panzergrenadiers and SS Panzergrenadiers ranges there really is nothing to stop you using them interchangeably in late war games. SS units did tend to have more machines guns and Assault Rifles however.
