I am very new to the 40k scene and all of my experience comes from playing with friends and using their extra armies to help learn the rules of the game, but now it comes to the point where I am ready to start my own army, but before beginning this great enterprise I want to make sure I am making the right decision. All I have had the chance to play so far are IG, Orks, and Black Templars.

I have been watching battle reports to try to gauge how other armies play, gauging strengths and weaknesses, play styles, general tactics, etc, but I do not feel terribly confident in choosing any one Army as of yet.

I am no stranger to table top games, or strategy games, so I know how I like to play and would like to find an army that fits my play style, as well as be reasonably priced, and aesthetically pleasing to me. I am also the kind of person who loves to get caught up in the lore of the games I play, and would like to play something that has a story behind it that I can really enjoy and connect with.

Below I will list some of the things I am looking for in an Army, and hopefully someone can suggest something that fits.

I normally like to play with a well rounded force. A group that is not really a master at anything, but are competent in everything. Very flexible and adaptable, and I really like to integrate the concept of combined arms, combing the use of Air assets with armor, infantry, and artillery. This is the kind of play style I am looking for in building an army, but I'd like to try an avoid something so Vanilla as Ultramarines, but if that is the best fit, that is the best fit.

As far as aesthetics, I have really come to admire the style of the Black Templars and the Ravenwing branch of the Dark Angels, but I am not married to the idea of either of them. I am very willing to compromise here. In general, I like Space Marines as opposed to the other types of armies there are to choose from, but that is my own personal bias due to my own affiliation with the Marine Corps.

As far as lore goes, I normally like playing for the "good" side, but I have often had fun playing on "evil" role playing the idea that good is just a matter of perspective. I was very intrigued by the Dark Angel's story, and how secretive they are, and how there seems to have been an internal split in the past. I also really enjoyed the Blood Angels lore and the story of Sanguinis.

With the Dark Vengeance starter set out, it seems like getting started with a Dark Angels force would be easy enough, but looking over play style I don't want to commit to strictly Deathwing or strictly Ravenwing, and really don't want to pick them just because they are the most convenient. I want to play what I will enjoy the most, and if it takes a little extra effort to gather my Army, so be it.

Hopefully this is enough information for you to recommend a solid Army for me to start into the 40k universe with. I may have jacked up a fair amount of information in this, and made some misconceptions, if so, please remember that I am some hardcore noob sauce, and would appreciate any corrections you can give me in addition to an army recommendation. If you have any other question that might help you recommend an army please ask. Thank you for your assistance.

Sounds like you already have your answer. I would suggest you buy into Dark Angels - they are likely to have a codex in the somewhat near future, anyways. Until then run the list as C:SM and profit.

I dont think there is a codex more adaptable and flexible as C:SM. As for aesthetics you could use the DA models but play them as a vanilla SM รก la DIY chapter.

Dont quote me on this but most people seem conviced that DA are up for the next codex release in Nov/Dec.

At the moment I'd say run with Codex: Space Marines. Fluff is what you make it.
