A little too heavy on Tactical Marines, perhaps you could drop a squad and use the 220 points to get a demolisher or two and/or drop pods for the dreds. On the note of tacticals, you put a lascannon and a flamer in the same squad. In general, If you are going to be camping with a lascannon, a short-range flamer would not be optimal. Perhaps a melta, those are always useful.

I would personally stick to the tactical squads, never underestimate them!! I would also go for a venerable dreadnought if you want las cannons...the higher bs always helps! Apart from that its a good smurf list...not to specific so you can mess about with it and see what's best for your type of play..perhaps consider a vindicator instead of a whirlwind....more expensive but you could sacrifice something else. Depends if you will sit back with the whirly or get in there with a vindy.

I always find it rough to fit enough useful stuff in a SM 1000pt list.

Personally, I'd lose 1 rhino and replace it with a drop pod for your ironclad. You want that dread close asap, and you don't REALLY need both tac squads to have rhinos (one can camp homefield objectives), plus it's tough to shave points elsewhere without making huge changes.

I'm not a huge fan of the Chapter Master myself, particularly without any gear at all. I think you'd be better served with either a Captain with a few useful upgrades (eg Artificer armour, Power weapon at least) or replacing him with a stock Librarian if you want the cheapest HQ you can. They can still be kinda useful to sit with a squad on an objective hopefully with some useful powers. Depends what you want your HQ to do of course.

I also don't really rate the Whirlwind, which is a shame because I love the model. If you could scrounge up a few extra points try out a Thunderfire cannon. I seriously underrated those things until I started running one. I'm now considering adding a second . Having said that I still play my whirlwind occasionally because dammit, I just like it.

Flamer/Lascannon is fine. Flamers are free and act as a minor deterrent/couple of free wounds if charged, and every now and then you get a great setup for them. If you combat squad the range difference between flamer & lascannon doesn't matter. Of course, it would be better as a plasmagun or melta in my opinion, but points are tight and you'd have to sacrifice somewhere to do that.

Upgrading a dread to Venerable is... a lot of extra points. It used to be good in 5th, I don't think it is worth the points in 6th particularly since the setup you want to run has weapons which are either TL (less value out of higher BS) or autohit. Rerolling on the damage table is so much less worthwhile now that you lose a hullpoint no matter what you roll.

Captains and chapter masters need gear to work. If you are going to filed a basic, naked, HQ, go for one that works better out of the box. Librarians are the best at this IMHO. If you want to field this guy because you like the model, run as a captain, not a master, and give him at least artificer armor and a power sword.

A pair of tac squads in rhinos make for a solid core for a SM list. I run mine MM/M, ML/F. I don't like spending point to upgrade the heavy weapon in a squad that's going to be moving most of the time. Combat squadding will let the LC sit back and shoot while the rest of the squad moves forward. If you are going to plan to do this, razorbacks are only a little more expensive then a rhino and offer cheep guns. It's probably worth doing this for one squad, to give your HQ a ad-hoc command squad (the sarge, flamer, and 3 marines)

Sniper scouts are a good, solid, objective camping unit. I'd toss a HB into the squad, I find it plays well with the sniper rifles. MLs can work, and have the benefit of coming in the sniper box.

I would probably not bother with the HF on the dread. He should be spending his time shooting tanks. Those are points that could be better spent elsewhere.

I like ironclads. But he really wants to be in a drop pod so he can smash things right off the bat. I keep thinking of running one with the hurricane bolter and a pair of HKs as a walking fire support platform. To be honest, I don't see him adding much to the list as-is. I'd replace him with something from the FA section. Either a 5 man assault squad or a land speeder or two. Stormtalon if you want to play with the new flyer rules.

IMHO Ultramarine armies should have something from every slot.

To be honest, I've never used a whirlwind. It basically HBs everything under a template. I'd rather have a Auto/HB "dakka" predator. But I think 6th edition did some nice things for whirlwinds, and people aren't used to them. They had (have?) a bad rep as being a sub-par unit. So it gives you army a little something that people won't expect. And that's a good thing.

Plus, they look cool.

chapter master where is he going ( it would be funny if he sat in the back of the bord and droped orbital bombardments all day long )

tactical squads should scrap las cannon they dont need it, give them a missile or somting cheaper insted

all the scouts should have snipers not just 1 guy

dead... meh? i would scrap it to be honest >.>

ironclad put it in a drop pod

rhinos for tac is fine

whirlwinds... i never use it so mabye its usefull mabye its not idk

i would give tack a missle or heavy bolter and flamer put them in rhinos and rush them forward to objectives

scouts would hide in cover and shoot targets ( hide them well so that your opponent forgets about them )

iron clad put in drop pod and drop on opponents side turn 1

scrap whirlwin and dread for points

now either spam your whirlwinds till your hearts content ( for the lolz )

or get devistators and put las cannons on them get multiple they work if theres more then 1

OR! get a flier and devistators ( missiles are best ) and put your hq back there and he will make it rain pie plates all day

we dunno wot you been told,
our Stormboyz here are mighty bold,

You can fire orbital bombardment multiple times? Don't we marine players all wish? Lol that's new! I wouldn't waste points on fliers, they're overrated pieces of s****t. Anything but fliers, like the idea of spamming whirlwinds.

In the space marine codex on the chapter masters page? If you could use it multiple times you wouldn't think everyone would! Haha

Sadly you can only use orbital bombardment once, that's actually why I chose to use the chapter master - I thought the strength 10 ap1 large blast template would be awesome. But what I'm reading here is most people don't think it's worth the points.

I never think about breaking up my tactical squads into 2 5 troop units, but that is really smart. I am going to take this advice and retool this list. Thanks for your help everybody!

Chapter masters are so worth it! I dunno about combat squads though.

Just take tacticals and combat squad them depending on the mission. Purchasing combat squads alone is pointless for C:SM because we don't get any weapon options save for the sarge loadout.

Agreed with this!
