Where do I even start? I want to either do a mixed faction army, or my own faction. Not sure where to start, where to get discount models etc. Help with themes, lists, models etc.

If you don't know what you want, then it's tough, because there are a lot of different strategies now. They have strong fast attack options, with bikes, spawn, and Helldrakes serving as real threats. Obliterators got a huge boost, and are great heavy support. The new deamon engines are decent, so Chaos can also build a good shooting army.

Think about what you want here. You want fast and resilient fighters? Slannesh can help. Want a very strong melee army with one of the best lord layouts in the dex? That's Khorne. Want an army that's not very fast, but damn hard to bring down? Call Grandfather Nurgle. Want solid sorcerers, better bolters, and extra invulnerable saves? Tzeentch would like to have a word.

Figure out what your battle plan will be. Some units and marks lend themselves better to certain strategies. Choose them after you decide HOW you want to fight.

For now, just get yourself some basic troops.

I got a codex today actually, which is what prompted my question. I love khorne and tzeentch. I think I want an army that can get personal, but doesn't have to. Zerkers, possessed, and some marines with mark of tzeentch. Not to mention s rhino.then I want a sorceror Hq, and eventually some obliterators, and a forgefiend to balance the close/far range units.
