Hey guys,

Not sure if you guys have seen this.

The guy who made Wing Commander is asking for pledges to a new Space Sim, the idea is to show the industry and gaming population that the PC is far from dead and can produce stuff that only consoles can dream of. He so far has achieved a $500,000 goal on Kickstarter in under 3 days! From the email I got they are just $50k away from reaching the amount needed to start production.

Here is the trailer for what he has planned (all in game footage)

The idea is for the game to have a campaign mode (if you chose to join the military) where you are a fighter pilot. You then retire and are let loose on the galaxy (bit like X3) however its online...think 1st person EvE.

The best bit and this makes me nerdgasum is you and say 8 of your mates could be chilling in the CIC of your buddies carrier when your jumped by pirates. As your buddy spools up the jump drives you and your 7 friends are rushing through a 1km carrier to get to your fighters to defend her as it preps to jump.

Here's Chris Roberts Website, loads more vids and notes on what to expect

So come on PC fans lets put a genera that warms the hearts of a lot of us back on the map and more importantly show everyone that PC's aren't dead they are just getting started!

They have now infact got to the $2mil mark.

Personally speaking this is looking like pretty much what I have always wanted in a space sim but no game has ever really come quite close enough, the X series is a bit too sterile, EVE is full of prats and the controls are too MMOish and so on. Of course I've pledged some money, $125 for the lancer level.

If anyone want to have a look at the specifications (and what they mean) for the ships which form part of the croud fundng reward they are here.

Explained no gameplay whatsoever. Not sure why i'm supposed to be excited over this, or what this has to do with PC gaming.

This guy along with id software pretty much heralded in the modern age of video games. In the days of 10 man dev teams he was making 20 million dollar games with a full cast (youtube wing commander 4 or 5)

It is there. Your not going to be disappointed though,if you really knew who this guy was.

If it looks like anything in those videos, it is going to be a new game that will really go places. Seeing as how some of the games out these days are crapping on thier shoes out the gate, I can see this one with some staying power, and really doing well if it lives up to his other work.

We'll see how it goes.

awesome-looking game.

But why such a rubbish name?

Personally speaking I don't think it's a rubbish name at all, not a great name certainly but a very descriptive one that perfectly sums up what Chris Roberts and his team are try to achieve. Namely a massive space based persistant universe populated by a large number of players or citizens if you will.

I actually dig the name - it's like a Heinlein title.

That said, I like my space sims with a liberal dose of Freddie Prinze Junior and Mathew Lillard, so I'm going to hold off 'til we see that stretch goal.

One thing I love is they are trying a whole sort of Roman Empire in space feel to the thing, where citizenship isn't a right its something that you earn though service. So you could have some players who are the "plebs" of the galaxy whilst you roll about being all smug in your battleship lol

Outside the DarkTower, amongst the roses.

I'm in. X3 with multiplayer sounds good to me. Although I really hope this doesn't feel too much like a mmo, my brain will know and then i wont enjoy it for some reason. I have yet to find a MMO that I like.

When you suffer a Falling Sky hit, roll a D6 - on a 4+ the hit is ignored as per the Pinch of Salt save. On a 1-3 panic insues - you automatically fail common sense tests for the next 2 weeks and get +7 to your negativity stat. -Praxiss

I've been dying for a game like this for years. I hope they can deliver on the vision they are trying to create.

"Ask ten different scientists about the environment, population control, genetics, and you'll get ten different answers, but there's one thing every scientist on the planet agrees on. Whether it happens in a hundred years or a thousand years or a million years, eventually our Sun will grow cold and go out. When that happens, it won't just take us. It'll take Marilyn Monroe, and Lao-Tzu, and Einstein, and Morobuto, and Buddy Holly, and Aristophanes…then all of this…all of this…was for nothing. Unless we go to the stars." So a guy that's done nothing but fail since his one innovation lost popularity discovered crowd funding and thus he's going to make the best game ever? Hate to be harsh there (not true, love it) but I can't say as I can place a lot of faith in this revolutionising the face of PC gaming.

Ah well, to each their own.
