..but then no one else was in the store at the time.

The actual console is much longer than the pictures make it seem; it is quite the rectangle. The controller didn't feel to bad in my big gorilla mitts, but it is wierd to have your hands spaced so far apart due to the shape of the controller. It was also lighter than I expected. There were a lot of videos on the demo, that you could leaf through using the touch pad. Each had a DEMO - VIDEO button under them on the touch screen, but the only one that actually had a demo was Rayman Legends. I didn't have a lot of time to mess around with it, but I thought I would share what I gleaned from my brush with the new system.

Have you been tested for fan boyism yet? It's never too early to make sure you don't become infected with Nintendo's addictively appealing personality and style

I've recently rethought my position on Nintendo. I used to hate them for their gimicky game mechanics, and constant rerelease of the same experience every couple of years. Sure I like Pokemon, and Zelda. But got to admit that Nintendo has kind of been riding the same horses going on two decades with very little change in the last decade.

However, I think maybe I was too hard. Of all the companies I can currently get games from, Nintendo really strikes me as one of the few that actually tries to make enjoyable experiences that will please fans, rather than churning out another game for the masses with as little effort as possible. I.E. I feel like they're one of the few in the industry not trying to screw me over or treat me like an idiot.

I'm reconsidering my stance on Wii U. Sure the controller annoys me, but they're releasing another one that's actually a normal controller. So yeah, maybe I'll be getting that stuff. Been awhile since I actually played a Zelda game or Mario Kart

I find Nintendo's entire aesthetic insulting and insist that such childish weird crap can only be appealing to those with a massive nostalgia instinct from childhood.

Your talking about Nintendo, its hard telling with people

After my long time to ponder on the WiiU, Ive decided that Im going to wait a year and see what their intentions are. Because I know from the Wii and my 3DS, they promise big time, and rarely seem to come through on the execution. My 3DS collects dust, and my Wii is modded, and guess what? It hasnt been played in months. Soooo Id be pissed if I spent the cash on a WiiU just to find out they stuck with the same ideas as the 3DS and Wii.

Though they are talking about big changes and going with more 3rd party games and "hardcore" games as well, but we shall see. If in a year, they are sticking to that strategy then I guess when I buy it, the games Ill want will be cheaper

Very cool you got to play with one though

If you ask me, the Gamecube was the last true console they ever released. Which is a shame, because it was pretty good.

I have never owned a Nintendo console in my life, and for that I feel slightly ashamed. Mainly because as a result I am deprived of the awesomeness that is Metroid.

I do intend to buy a Nintendo 64 though, even if only for Conker the Squirrel's Bad Fur Day.

Yeah, but it's heavily censored and edited in the Xbox remake.

Eh, for me it's a choice between a Wii-U and a new processor for my computer ,and the latter is definitely a more likely choice until the Wii-U goes down in price...

People want the same thing. Why was the Mega Man series so wildly successful? I would kill for a non-3d Zelda game that stuck to the original game play formula (up through LttP). I wish we had more straight platformers still :/ They tend to do cool things and deliver good experiences with their weird stuff, save the odd Virtual Boy.

I'm the latter, but Nintendo games are solid and consistent. I suppose a million soldier games that are basically the same are much cooler than weird Japanese crap.

Nintendo is no better than the "million soldier games all the same", they basically just rerelease a few games every year.

Console wars are bad and bad for you. Don't do them.

Besides, everyone knows that PC based indy games are where it's at

What game gets rereleased besides Pokemon? This sounds kinda not right to me. And I care about games more than consoles.

Mario. Zelda. Hell, even Metroid to an extent. Kirby nowadays gets his due as well. Nintendo hasn't really done much with what few new intellectual properties it has gained in the last few years. Mostly, they just rehash their decades old IPs instead.

The other companies wish they had IPs as popular and well known as Nintendo's of course.

Hooooo boy. You've opened the box now. A shitstorm is coming. I can see the moon crying in pain and starting to fall now.

(Yes I realize you were joking, but you know what people are like).

I agree that Nintendo needs some fresh IP rather than bashing the same poor titles to death to shake out what money remains in their violated carcasses. By all means give them a proper sendoff (a really good Metroid game could persuade me to get a WiiU) and let Samus, Link and so on die with dignity (Let's face it, Mario is wired to some hideous Giger-esque tentacle waving money milking life support machine and will never be allowed to die) and make some new stuff.

Of course this is never going to happen because if Nintendo thinks they can make money out of Mario Versus Alien Versus Predator, they will make it, no matter how degrading it is to our Italian plumbing friend.

It is odd that people blame Nintendo for making the same titles over and over, but it is the customers who are demanding it and paying for it in droves. At least they almost never phone it in and each game they have made usually scores high marks with critics and fans. I hear people complain all the time about wanting more original titles (both in games and film) but new IP's almost never do as well as sequels and spin offs, and often by a large amount.

Nintendo doesn't think they can make more money making a Mario game, they know they can make more money making a Mario game, and we are to blame.

I blame all big game companies for recycling.

I also blame people for being boring and stupid, too.

There's plenty of blame to go around.

Also a lot of there console exclusives evolve over time it's not like they're releasing the exact game every time Metroid Prime is quite different than Super Metroid and Mario 64 is quire different from Super Mario Bros. 3 for example.

What the hell is wrong with having a million Mario games? 99% of them are fun and awesomely made games. People seem to forget about this little called GAMEPLAY that should be the only factor on deciding a video game's worth to begin with. If every year I was guaranteed a new classic Mario or top-down Zelda game I would die a happy man. There's nothing wrong with them, so why screw it up?

That and graphics and stability. If I buy a PS3 game I don't want Sega Saturn graphics (no offense intended towards Sega Saturn owners) and I want the game to actually work properly (admittedly, things like the Skyrim Magical Gravity Defying Horse are pretty hilarious).

Still, I am in two minds as to whether to buy a Gamecube and Metroid Prime, on account of the game's awesomeness.

Ill agree to a point. But I still blame them for the amount of advertising they allow. When a new Mario game or similar is coming out, it is shoved in your face so hard you get sick of it. Now compare that to other IPs and most of them you see on a shelf and say "Hey whats that?" and crook your head. Some of the BEST games Ive played in the last couple years oddly enough were for the Wii, but no one has EVER head of them. Its one perk to having a modded Wii, because Im free to wade through the gak to find good games. For example, "Lost in Shadow" has been the best game Ive played in many, many years and it is incredibly original. Ive since seen games on XboxLive and PSN copy the idea like mad.

You want a good Wii game, go check that one out, you WONT be disappointed. And again, 90% of the time I bring it up, people give me that dumb look, and its better then any recent big name games by a land slide

I would argue that a game crashing had something to do with gameplay, since not being able to play is a pretty big factor in that. As far as graphics go, I don't care if the game is fun. I really, really don't. Lots of people do, and that's why we have lots of shallow, pretty games now.

This. I love Mario games. Anyone that doesn't like them can go [BALEETED] themselves with a playstation controller.

My only regret from my divorce was that I didn't get custody of the Wii.

Cannerus makes a fine point indeed about graphics and the lack of decent gameplay. Although all these pretty games are fun, up to a point, I still unpack a load of old consoles regularly and play the hell out of them. 'Cannon Fodder', 'Mario 3', 'Kid Chameleon' and 'Streets Of Rage' have all been played in the last week alone. My PS3 gathers dust for long periods of time. In fact it's living with my brother at the moment!

As for the Wii-U, I'll be reserving judgement on that for at least a year. I bought a Wii and was dissatisfied with many of the games on the whole. I've owned a NES, a SNES and a GameCube in my time and loved them all. Still have the SNES actually. But the Wii disappointed me greatly. So, yeah, judgement is reserved for sure....

You should go one better and get an advance with Metroid Zero Hour? (long time since I had it), play it, complete it, unlock the original and play that too. Sheer awesomeness!
