Trying to work on a compedative list for 6th edition Competitions coming up in local area, usually mixed opponents, have had varied success so far but ironing out the kinks... One tournament in January, a larger States tournament in July, and then potentially a ATC qualify... Psychic spell trees are decided before game but after opponents armies are revealed, and I usually roll for the Tervigons first before determining spells for Flyrants...

Flyrant, HVC (Paroxysm, Telepathy spell)

Flyrant, TL Devourers w/Brainleech worms (Paroxysm, Telepathy spell)

Tervigon, Toxin Sacs (Biomancy spell)

Tervigon, Toxin Sacs (Biomancy spell)

Termagents (10)

Termagents (10)

Hormagaunts, Toxin Sacs (20)

Hormagaunts, Toxin Sacs (20)

Doom of Malantai, Mysetic Spore

Venomthrope

Venomthrope

Carnifex, TL Devourers w/Brainleech worms

Carnifex, TL Devourers w/Brainleech worms

Carnifexes are not competitive with 6 ed's onset, they are better replaced by trygons.

I like the flyrants and tervigons but the hormagaunts are out of place. Perhaps the two squads could be switched out for another tervigon and a squad of termagaunts.

Tervigons are the big cheese of 6 ed for tyranids, Spam them!

I think you should try to get pods for the Carnifexes if you want to run them that way.

I'd also group the venomthropes to help preserve first blood and kill points.

Go for TL Devs on both Flyrants. They have to take either codex powers or some combination of BRB powers. They can't do both. So no paroxysm and Telepathy.

I'd try to group 30 hormagaunts together and get hive commander on your warlord. It'll let you outflank them and it'll increase your chances for your flyers and pods to come in turn 2.

If you can spare 85 points somewhere, I'd try to get a wall with a quad gun. They BS4 venomthropes can fire it and make your opponent think twice as he brings in his flyers.

Tyranid models can't man the quad gun it's in their FAQ.

But I agree hormagaunts are pretty useless in 6th edition, and 2x TL devourers on flyrants seem to be the best choice. I always run Dakkafexes as they usually do the most damage for me in my games, but it's all personal preference I would just try some games and see if you like them.

They can't man emplaced weapons (aka, the bastion weapon) but they can man weapon emplacements (aka, the aegis weapon and other battlefield debris-type weapons).

I know it's kind of beardy, but you know what? No one else get's FAQ'd out of using a key part of 6th ed so I'm going RAW on this.

Nice suggestions, nice correction on the spells... Such a pain as Paroxysm is the only spell I like in the codex, but perhaps 2 from the rule book will suffice...

The HVC on the Flyrant is to take out flyers (Despite the lack of overwatch ability) as they errata'd the tyranids to be able to buy buildings, but only able to use automated weapons (ie Heavy Bolters on the Bastion), and as the flyrants have skyfire its the best option, the other with the TL Devourers is for dakka whilst having a slight chance in a rear attack against flyers and Med-tanks...

Can only have the 3 Tervigons if I have 3 broods of Gents, and as its restricted game/turn time in the competitions having 3 spawning like sluts is no good as it means slow moving and pissed off opponents (low sportsmanship scores)...

The 2 units of Hormagaunts have been handy at taking multiple sides of the field, and multiple hard units such as SM terminators although i was actually contemplating the single unit of 30 to save points... Outflanking gaunts is scary, and being out of synapse gives them the +2A or the charge but only Ld6, so if they get shot at when they charge, there is actually a good chance they will flee as quickly as they entered the field (although survivors will tend to flee back to big synapse mumma's)...
And useless I think not, people freak when you get two units each one inflicting between 2-60 Int 5 attacks, with re-rolls of 1's, all poisoned (Good night DE and Guard)... Terminators fall like leaves before they get a chance to fight back, and even if they survive are as much a tarpit as the gents, but against vehicles or walkers they do suck balls (I tend to stay away from them anyways)...

Venomthropes, yeah, I did originally run just the brood of 1, but he got picked out as you said by insta kill weapons, then I had 2 in a brood they'd get picked off together... but now what I do is hide them completely behind the Tervigons or Carnifexs so you can't see them and you cant shoot at them, plus the cloud shields more of the army whilst they can spread away to flanks... Besides its hard to get first blood with nids as you have to get close before they shoot you down and as far as kill point games 1-in-6 chance of the mission, and one which nids can only usually win through tabling or hiding out of LOS...

I like the idea of Hive commander, mainly to get the Doom in right away, and to have usually one of the 20 men Hormagaunts, or perhaps even a Tervigon outflank... But where to get the 25 points?...

I am also considering the 2 Trygons, but I like the fear of 18" TL weapons and STR9-10 AT bashs of the Carnifexs and believe it or not the Carnifexs usually kill the most enemy units even with just the TL Devourers and Sything Talons (which save my bacon alot against tanks and character challenges), after of course the Doom, and then I have to find another 50 points to make them Trygons... You do get the +2A from rage, +1Ld, 2 times Sything Talons, +2 Ws, +2 W, yess a very hard choice...

Perhaps reducing to the 1 Brood of Gaunts, maybe replacing Carnifexs with Trygons (Maybe one on field and another DS, I tend not to rely on too much DS thanks to Coteaz and Interceptor), might try the single brood of Venoms however it is possible to keep them out of sight, perhaps even keeping one in reserve to come up with the Trygon... As for the Aegis, I laugh when my opponent uses them and I get into his face and use its 4+ cover for myself for the last few turns of the game...

Q: Are Tyranid units inside buildings (i.e. the Bastion) subject to
instinctive behaviour tests? Furthermore, are they able to manual fire
emplaced weapons or weapon emplacements?
A: No to both questions.

They can not use weapon emplacements says right there.

I just checked that... when the heck did that change? I literally just got my converted, painted Quadgun for nothing.

Oh well, 9 hive guard in my list it is.
