Dear Dakka,
So there seems to be a lot of dislike for stormboys from everyone I have talked. Now, these chaps are my favourite unit, but here in 6th edition they have been getting swatted.
How I have been using them:
Flanker(unsuccessful as they get secluded and picked off easily)
A countercharge or surprise charge following trukks or mobs of boys and then jumping out at their victims (Mixed success)
How I field them:
9 stormboys, nob w/ powerklaw, bosspole-160
I do not field zagstrukk, because he is a bit of points and I do not necessarily want the deepstrike death charge)
Does anyone have any tactics they would like to share about our beloved rokkit-freekz? Particularly in trukker armies?
Thanks,
DaK

I find them tactically hard because whenever I fielded them,
I didn't want to dive straight in & wanted to use their mobility to move around the field, usually to the other side of where I deployed them. This works good for messing the other players plans, but I realize too late I could have used the PK to charge that vindicator on turn 1/2 or smt.
How do you balance between fast attack (which is actually not how I use them),
and more late game sudden-punch unit that can move then all other stuff is bogged down?
Also I would only but the PK on it if the boyz don't run them, putting it on by default among other PK's is a bit risky as they are likely to die.
I'd consider Zagstrukk when playing vs TAU or IG turtle style, because sometimes you just need to break that line at all costs, even if it's a waste of points, without it your more point-efficient models will also be wasted as they don't get to see combat. He should just be 10-15 points cheaper imo.

I've used them in the past as a counter charge unit, but they're very hit & miss.
I think if you want to use them you need to pick your fights. You always want to be swamping a unit that'll strike last, or a unit that is numerically inferior or much weaker than you.
I love the models & I have a soft spot for them, but they're pretty expensive in points & I rarely run them anymore because theyre just not as good as dakkajets or buggies.

That's the problem, they're so expensive in points, given they die just as fast as a much cheaper boy - the flying doesn't seem enough of an advantage to make up for that cost, in an average all-comers army.
Most people are equally unenthused on trukk boyz any more, for similar reasons. Although stormboyz do at least allow a decent number of boyz in a squad - 20 are at least likely to do some damage (although with the downside that you're spending even more points).
If you can make a squad of 20 work, possibly led by Zagstruk, that seems the best option. But a whole lot of points. :(

The only way I've ever used them effectively is as a 5-man squad, including a Nob with PK. That's 95pts, roughly equal to 2 Rokki-Koptas.
In this configuration they tend to perform well as an anti-tank / anti-devastator unit because they're cheap, fast, easy to hide and low on the ennemy target priority.
In any other configuration, they're just too expensive to be competitive... Bringing their cost down was a good move by Phil Kelly, but he didn't go far enough. They should be 9pts / model.

I have had one great experience with them in 5th edition when they flanked and destroyed 2 chimeras and the crewman inside. This was only a 5-man squad that the opponent had the mistake to ignore. My other experiences have been things like a blob of termagaunts taking them out from both shooting coupled with overwatch and things like they come on only to be taken out by a battlecannon or MC.
Perhaps throwing them in transports or having them dart from cover to cover is the best way to go. My understanding is to use them like Miniwargaming-Dan uses trukks, ninjas. Have them hug cover to cover before they jump out and attack

Its a shame really, the models are so awesome.
To bad they are way overpriced for how squishy they are. If i do bring them I tend to keep them in reserve as they can get shot off pretty easily.
With the speed they have they can get around quick enough to help where you need it.
