I had just assumed that the Shining Spears were now equipped with power lances, since the changes 6th brought in. However, having another look at the Eldar codex, I see that they are actually called Laser Lances that are S6 on the charge, not just +1 and can be thrown with the 'lance' special rule. The Exarch's is even better. My reading of this is actually that they are counted as unusual power weapons and should in fact still use the rules in the Eldar codex.

Having them classed as simply power lances would be a huge nerf to what is already an overcosted unit so I was just wondering what the general consensus is here on Dakka? Had I been wrong in my initial interpretation or is my revised interpretation wrong? Also, if they are classed as unusual and still follow the codex rules, what AP are they off the charge? 4 or - would be my guess.

S6, and the thrown weapon rule, are unique rules, so they are not Power Lances

Yeah, this seems like kind of an old codex mess. The way the rule's currently written, unless the Spears charged (in which case the lances are s6 ap3), their laser lances do absolutely nothing. No ap4, no anything.

No, it's an unusual Power Weapon and as such follow the rules for Unusual Power Weapons, no mess at all.

This is great news. Thanks for clarifying it for me. Don't know why I thought they had power lances, guess I should read more thoroughly in future huh?
