Could anyone help me out with a competitive 1000 point Dwarf army? I really like the look of the Dain and Balin, and the Iron Guard models, if those can be worked into a solid list. Thanks guys.

Do you have ideas as to how you might want to organize your army? If you want to have both Dain and Balin, as well as some Iron Guard this is a rough draft of something you could work with, I'm assuming your looking for a LoTR army not a WoTR army:

Warband 1: (215)
>>Balin, Lord of Moria + Durin's Axe (95)
>8x Iron Guard (120)

Warband 2: (245)
>>Dain Ironfoot, King of Erebor (125)
>8x Iron Guard (120)

Warband 3: (173)
>>Dwarf Captain + Shield (65)
>12x Dwarf Warriors + One Hand. Axes + Shields (108)

Warband 4: (173)
>>Dwarf Captain+Shield (65)
>12x Dwarf Warriors + One Hand. Axes + Shields (108)

Warband 5: (193)
>>Dwarf Captain + Shield (65)
>1x Standard Bearer (38)
>10x Dwarf Warriors + One Hand. Axes + Shields (108)

Total Point: 994
Breaking Point: 56 Models

I dont have any experience with dwarves, this list is something I pulled out of nowhere with the rule book and the warhammer website, so I suggest you look into adding some dwarf ballistas and maybe a dwarf champion and in exhange make some changes to some of the warbands. I would have added dwarf rangers, ballistas, the a champion though I couldn't find the rules and point cost. If you have the khazad-dum supplement you could find the rules for those units and see to incorporating those into your army. Good luck with it

Ballista's are IMO one of the best units available to dwarves, they're very good at dealing with trolls and powerful enemy characters so I would include at least one of them. Iron guard are good but vulnerable to shooting as they are only defence 6 so you may want to reorganize the warbands so that the iron guard are mixed amongst dwarf warriors to hide behind until combat. I'd give a unit bows which combined with a ballista should make short work of enemy cavalry. To scrounge up some points you could downgrade Dain to a captain or possibly floi stonehand as at 1000pts people may bring all kinds of nasty special rules.

3 hobbit movies! Looks like Peter Jackson did a George Lucas.

I'm not too good with the specifics, but iron guard are good... once they get into combat. in shooting, they can get picked off fairly easily, hence why I tend to run shield-bearing dwarves to soak up the fire and add a bit of survivability.
Dain is always a good choice for a good hero, though I'd run with Gimli over Balin.
Ballistas are definitely evil when they hit a troll or other tough creature/hero, but fairly inaccurate, though 3-4 turns of shooting before it gets hand-to-hand should be enough to bring one down.
I also run with Vault warden teams, simply to hold back and tie up enemy models or effectively block off a narrow passageway, though their fighting ability diminishes somewhat if they're flanked.

Other than ballistas, I tend to just not go with shooting- dwarf bows aren't enough range for my liking, and dwarf rangers are just too expensive.

definitely painful, but fielding under 50 models at 1000 points is a bit too much- unless it's a tunnel fight or some such, you're gonna be surrounded and trapped pretty easily. I'd cut back by ditching Dain or Balin (Probably Balin) and maybe the khazad guard, and running a couple more warbands of dwarf warriors with shields.

so yeah, use the elite warband of the king's champion's lot to do the real damage, with the dwarf warriors fanning out and basically holding objectives and making sure the champion doesn't get surrounded.

you could also drop a couple of guys with shields for a ballista to take on the monstrous creatures (especially with these new rules, they're painfully good).
