Which is overall the better choice for a chaos undivided player? Then how about each of the four ruinous powers, which one maximizes their potential?

Personally I've never really seen an obliterator unit make their points back.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."
"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

Terminators are more my style as they are far more versatile. But they're in different Force Organization slots. Taking both is always an option.

Both have completely diffirent roles, Terminators are Shock/Assault troops, Obliterators are long ranges Multi-purpose shooting troops. What ever you need is best, or whatever models you like more.

Oblits got their assault cannon back, I can swear by them again.
• Assault cannon • Plasma cannon
• Heavy flamer • Twin-linked flamer
• Lascannon • Twin-linked meltagun
• Multi-melta • Twin-linked plasma gun
A weapon for any occasion.
I've always made back my points at least double with Oblits. You just need to learn how keep them dandy

They didnt have an assault cannon in 3.5 or 4. They had a HB in 3.5
T5 oblits for 76 points? Yes. Shame theyre not fearless, but you can make them Ld9 for a few more points.

I was told by an older player they used to have them.
No idea when that was.
I'll attach a marked HQ to the buggers to make them fearless if I felt they needed it*
If I had 9 I'd run them all

Playing against the chaos player at my club terminators don't kill as much as oblits. His oblits insta killed 8 of my nid warriors in two turns while the terminators killed a few genestealers but then got destroyed by the 90 shots from devil gaunts

Yeah, I am still finding the termis mostly useful for termicide attacks, where they do tend to kill their targets, then get shot to pieces. Which is nice, cause they usually just make their points, but take a lot of firepower to put down. especially now where you can get cheaper marks for small troops.
But oblits have always been amazing for me. It's not just the armor popping, they do make their point back, but not hugely usually, as their firepower to points ratio is actually fairly low. But the amount of effort people take to kill them is hilarious. In addition, the units they DO kill are almost always the most important ones. Dont underestimate having the right tool for the job.
That being said, with the recent power up they got, being able to become T5, and the 5++ I will probably be playing them a lot more aggressively, so I expect to be making my points back even more.

jdjames - to my knowledge they ahve never managed assault cannon - i dont have a copy of 3rd edition (first crap attempt, before 3.5) but they certainly 100% did not have assault cannon in 3.5 or 4th. That was always the joke with them - the model had assault cannon but the rules didnt let them fire it.
Drduckman - theyve had a 5+ inv for 3 codexes, including this one.
I have loved them since running an IW list and having 6 of them back when we were only allowed 3 usually. 6 at 556 is a good buy - that many lascannon starts to behave like a skyfire lascannon as well

In 3.5 ed (if I remember correctly) they had a heavy bolter, frag missle launcher, and autocannon, amongst other weapons.

Nope, no autocannon, and no frag. Their first blast was the plasma cannon in 4th

Oblits are the bane of my recent battles. Extremely versatile at range but small units mean a couple of lucky shots can take them out. Get them in combat and despite the power fists they fall quickly. Keep them at a distance and they'll make their points back in no time.

My buddy runs a pair of oblits in every Chaos list he makes. They almost always make their points back. I can't count the number of transports he's popped with them, rhinos, razorbacks, and Land Raiders fear his Obliterators.

Definitely - tl-melta or multimelta means that landraiders fear them, and with a g'teed 6" move now that S&P has changed they are more likely to hit their idela range.
T5 all the way, though. I dont see any other mark being as much use - even Tz and sticking them behind a landing pad (for your daemonic allies) isnt as good, as its either small arms fire that kills them - which T5 helps against - or S8+ weaponry - which T5 helps against

Havocs are good for cheap autocannon fire; flakks are too expensive.
Best combo i've seen for them is 4 autos plus aegis / bastion with quad gun - 8 non TL, 4 TL autocannon shots with skyfire and interceptor, and cheap. Shreds light tanks and flyers

I prefer Terminators over Oblits when I make a CSM list, that is because I tend to want to have something that can keep the wall of green skinns or Nids back. I have four Ork players and three Nid players and a lone Sm player that I regulary play against. So I seldom have a need for more heavy long range fire power other than what my Havocs and Forgefiends provide.

It depends on what your local players play, but I like my Oblits far more than my Termies. 152 for 2 T5 2+/5++ models armed to the teeth with shooty goodness? Warp yeah. Stick them in a ruin and laugh off your enemy's ranged weapons, you can even charge them with their powerfists if you need to (I would generally advise against doing this, but can be useful every now and then). I can make my points back with the 140-150 point Oblits far more easily than the 200+ point Terminator squad, considering the Termies get fired upon by everything once they hit the board. Hell Oblits can makes their points back with one plasmacannon shot. It's all about target priority. Shoot the things that are absolutely important to kill in order to win, don't waste the obliterator's fire on something minor unless this might threaten your Oblit (e.g. a potential charging unit that could tie Mr. Obi up for a turn or two).

Oblits are the best choice in the heavy slot imho... but Termies are far from the best elite choice... and has been stated, they fill very different roles so my answer would be Oblits over Termies or both.
