So I'm making a chaos lord out of bits, and also making champions for squads out of bits, but I want to make sure that on the tabletop, everyone knows "THAT one is the chaos lord", but they look pretty similar, similar wargear etc. How do I make the lord look more than the champions?

I usually just give the lord a little more to set him apart. A more ornate backpack, a few more skull trophies, a bigger weapon. Basically anything that makes him look more 'accomplished'. Demonic gifts, ect.

it depends how thourough you want to be.

i set my termiantor champ apart by just giving him one fo the terminator trophy ranks (i normally dont use them at all).

My Terminator Lord on the other hand rocks a servo harness....kinda makes him hard to miss.

You could either to something like just give him a bigger or more ornate look - or maybe model something army specific - servo arm for Iron Warriors, pre-heresy jump pack for Jump Lord, loads of skulls on the base for khorne etc etc.

You coudl also build his base up just alittle so he is a little taller. Even something like 3mm would mark him out without making a huge difference to LOS.

I also think a base is an easy win and quick to do. If you do a standard base on standard troops (sand drybrushed to your chosen colour) then maybe add some height by putting him on a collapsed wall (foam board) , on some iron girders (cut up and filed sprues) or on top of a rock (carved from a wine bottle cork).

My commander sits on a terminator base (40mm)? with a fence behind him that he looks to have walked through. Not only does it add extra detail and height, but the chance for other colours to be added that are not on your marines pallets. Those colours may draw peoples eyes to him first and help to differentiate him.

Hope this helps!

A banner, more ornate armor and weapons, cooler head and armor, cape, trophy rack, glitzier paintjob or scenic base are all good bets. If he's on the same size base as the other guys but slightly elevated it'll look great.

or even just change the pose.

If you could model it with twin power swords (woudl make a difference rule-wise as his wargear would still ist a pistol) crossed over his head whiel the shouts into the heavens - THAt would look cool.

Even something as simple as a different color on the shoulders would be an easy adjustment to make, although one likely better suited to Aspiring Champions than a Chaos Lord.

I out with in both 40k and WHFB.

Its a bit annoying that they haven't brought out a Lord kit like the loyalist Captain box.

Could be really good.

i think i'm gogin to end up using the old metal Warsmith model. It comes with a power claw so i could use it as a "counts as" powersword/axe/maul without having to magnetise anything.

I'd put some GS in the indented part of the torso where the legs go(to add a bit of height) from what I've seen Chaos is a little bit like

orks in that lords/champs usually seem bigger. Look at Abbadon for example, he's (at least supposed to be) huge, even for astartes

standards. I wouldn't make them a head taller or anything, just noticeably taller, and use an older MK of armor,

maybe from FW if you want to get fancy. Paint him differently too, as in shoulder pads, or you could use the fantasy warriors bits, like a warriors of chaos helmet.

giving him a cape from the warriors of chaos kit would definitely help. just glue a piece of power armor to the front. and stick the legs on. Hope this helps

I ended up just changing his backpack. Gave him a spare berzerker packa but clipepd off the vents and replaced them with a couple of the smaller gargoyle heads from the vehicle sprue.

Works for me.

Kitbash. I just built a sorcerer with the Termie Lord sorcerer head, Raptor parts, the had and staff from the Termie Lord kit, and the cape from that kit. Took an force lightning piece from an Emporer Palpatine figure to actually create a sorcerous blast lifting him off the ground. Can't wait to paint it up, and make it wildly unique.
