Tell us more about about how your opinion is relevant, especially considering that you're not even the target audience for the strip.

BTW this strip is especially cool because the son of the author of this strip plays WH40k...I would know, we play on a regular basis when we're back home from college.

Hey I like this one because they have a Warhammer 40k reference which surprised me, the unexpected result was what I found humorous but most Family Circus strips the jokes are really obvious and cliche. The comics also love using puns which is often cited as the "lowest form of

humour" the only time puns are funny is when they're so bad you're laughing at how stupid it is. So is this funny?

This!

I didn't even find this one funny. Although someone else pointed out that it might be a play on Ghost and be subtly referring to Gaunt's.

As an aside, I'd recommend that you read this. Sure occasionally you'd have a couple puns but there's some great stuff here, it gives you a real insight to the strip. http://www.tcj.com/bil-keane-an-appreciation/

I laughed pretty hard at this comic today. Made me proud to know that I was the inspiration for this one. ^

I'm fine that you don't like the strip. It is not for everyone. Heck, I don't even find it that funny from time to time. But I disagree and believe that it is funny and wholesome, you just have to have the sort of old person "Awww, my little Jimmy would say the same thing," response. If/when you are old and grey I'm sure it will start to be more humorous.

Keep in mind that this comic strip is half a CENTURY old. It has to be good if it's survived this long. What have you accomplished today? Not a whole lot I presume. This is my grandfather's and father's legacy and I will stand up for it. Even if this comic made ONE person smile today (accomplished) it was worth the effort. Needless to say, this made my Halloween awesome.

Puns aren't in themselves a problem, I think-- they're basically just jokes based on association, but the problem is that about the only times they're good is when it's based on spontaneity, which is inherently missing in something like this (or, like you're saying, there are those groan-worthy ones...

I'd say the real problem is "obvious and cliché". This one, I'd say, isn't any more or less obvious, it just happens people here like it b/c it's something that feels more like an in-joke. If they did the same thing with Batman, it would be arguably better (less niche), but I doubt that anyone here would have taken note.

I think having it as a Batman reference wouldn't have been as funny because Batman is a well known character and would be an expected costume for a child to wear, the reason this joke works is because it's not an answer you would expect and even if you don't know what 40k is I think the

joke still works because it would still surprise the audience.

I'd actually say that it works more poorly because of how little recognition there is due to specificity (as it isn't even something more generic, like "I wanna be a space marine"), but you're right that Batman is a bit mainstream as a counterexample. I also, frankly, find it a bit surprisingly out of character, considering how milquetoast/unspecific most of the characters/strip is.

See this is why the joke works for me it's completely out of character, even the language the child uses is way too complex for a kid.

Not even a fanboy, I just wish there was some more positivity on Dakka in general, it's sad that something that promotes 40k is being bashed.
That being said, I'm going to go enjoy Halloween, watch "It's a Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!" and dress up as Tarkus of the 4th Company of the Blood Ravens.

Have a good night everyone!

I'll agree with that. The things my kids come out with floor me sometimes with the detail they go into when describing something they like and using words I didn't know they had.

I've been around kids a lot the last couple of years. My wife and I are babysitting choice #1 for her nephew, and talking to that kid is a blast. But everything that kid says is way funnier than Family Circus.

Seriously, it's a really bland comic.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

This is precisely what the comic is meant to do. It works on that level. It is funny because as a parent if your son came up to you and said this you would do a "what the-errmmmm ok son that sounds good." moment and then laugh it off... which is probably something that is lost on us w/o kids or experiences with this. I laughed because it was something I would totally say as a kid. My dad found it humorous because it is something his young son would propose as a Halloween costume, and there would be a puzzlement and acceptance at the same time.

I actually spoke with my dad about the comic and he said it was difficult getting the right 'feel' for the joke. He wanted it to sound funny and complex even if someone has no idea what WH40k is or who Tarkus is. Also, I believe the term 'space marine' may be trademarked by GW (not sure) so that would not have been a possibility to use.

Making people half-smile isn't that great of an acheivement. It's nice to be proud of your parent's work, but it's no excuse to belittle others.

In terms of belittling people, that is not what I intended. I was just saying that it is a legacy that has survived this long so it is obviously popular and doing something right. I am not claiming to have accomplished anything great either, I'm just saying that it is something that has an impressive lifespan and is still continuing and is still loved. That's very special to me and to a lot of people. Also, making even ONE person smile would be worth it to my grandfather/father. So much of the world is pain and sadness and struggles. If even for one person's day was made slightly better because they smiled from that comic, that is a little more brightness in their life that wasn't there before. I feel that is something to be proud of. Plus one smile at least, every day, for half a century is a lot of smiles and happy people. That's a pretty impressive achievement if you ask me.

Also the thought of "Battle Brother Billy, Inquisitor Jeffy, Battle Sister Dolly, and Servitor PJ" makes me laugh. Just an image that sprouted up from this.

Yes that would be correct. But don't go spreading it around eh? Just sticking up for my grandad and my dad

If nothing else, this comic was dedicated to me personally basically as a shout out to me and my friends' favorite hobby experience haha. It's strange how much my dad knows without ever directly interacting with something like 40k... >.> <.< I guess that's what dad's do though haha.

Also, Foxtrot usually does more 40k type references as Bill Amend (creator of FoxTrot and one of my dad's/my friends) is a mega-nerd. But his comic revolves around that sort of stuff. This Family Circus is funny because it's so out of place, but something that your child would totally come up and say to a parent. They'd be forced to do the "what is a- oh, ok then. Whatever a Tarkus is I'll make that costume for you...sigh..."
