Just curious really.... I mean that sort of thing has to have some effect on the voters living on the east coast. Won't it?

I'd like to think that it would take a lot more than an extreme weather event to affect the way I vote.

Not if they can swim! And let's be honest with ourselves; if they can't swim, do we really want them voting anyway?

Couldn't agree more dude! Although I'd probably be slightly more apathetic about voting if I had to swim through Long Island just to get to a polling station!

More at issue is the "ability" to vote...

Many people have lost : power, transportation, ID, are displaced/unable to return t their homes/communities, etc.

Will all polling places have power?

How many people will find their pressing needs brought about by the storm more important than getting out to vote?

No not boats. They can't learn how to swim then. Arm floats. Give them a pair of arm floats. They learn how to swim and can vote

It might affect the vote... we had something very similar to this in Germany a few years ago... Just before the election (popular guy versus the guy with more votes, it was a close run), some towns got flooded and Schröder, the popular guy, did what Obama just did, stopped his campaign and managed to organise everything again. Everyone agrees that this got him elected again, he'd have lost otherwise.... so yeah, lucky Obama....

LOOK!! a shameless self-promotion! (gasp!)

Fox estimated like 2 million likely not to vote due to clean up, power, road damage, home security/securing their valubles, and otherstuff

This is one case where the US electoral colleges are an advantage. Since each state's vote is in effect a "black box" that outputs N electoral college votes, merely depressing voting numbers in a particular state will not have as great an effect.

So the richer, more ruggedly non-dependent-on-government-entitlement conservative voters may edge out the poorer elements of society and swing NY into the red for the first time in decades?

As I said earlier in another thread, I think this is either candidate's moment to shine and show what they are really made of. It's my understanding that Romney told people looking to contribute to his campaign to give the money to a relief fund instead. On top of that, he has been putting some of his personal resources into the mix.

Obama can use his position to do great things, and as far as I've seen has been on top of the situation.
My ideal scenario would be to see them make a joint appeal for the area and be seen working side by side to help the people there.

Whew right int the deep end. If my house was exposed to the elements with no way to secure it do you think I go vote? Beside a Hurricane doesn't discriminate
