So, in my last game, a friend of mine who plays Necrons decided since it was one of my last games before leaving,
he was going to bring out a really lame list. He had 5 doomsday arks (we play 2,500pt games) and hid them behind an Aegis, and had
enough Crypteks to basically keep nightfighting in play almost for the entire game, and long enough to whittle my long fangs down.
Needless to say it was the most boring and pointless game I've ever played. Now, where I get pissed is because I had two vehicles with searchlights,
a good distance away, and they said I had to be able to shoot a target first to use them, I don't remember the rule exactly, but I remember thinking
I would like a second opinion on that. So what does everyone think? Do you have to actually shoot a target first, to be able to use searchlights?

Yes.

"If a vehicle has a searchlight, it can, after firing all of its weapons choose to illuminate its target. . ."

Emphasis mine.

Your right, well, that's lame. Guess I was just doomed to sit there and get cheesed.

Or you can move your vehicle into range and light up the enemy units.

sounds like you have a great friend if their idea of having a fun game to send you off is to build a douchetastic army & play a gak game. Maybe find a new game group upon your return from wherever.

You got hosed if your buddy thought the DD ark could get any kind of line of sight over the aegis, that gun is horrendously low on those things. And to claim any kind of cover "from" the aegis, as I'm sure he was doing, the 25% would cover up the gun and thus it would remove it's LOS on his turn as well. Does that make sense?

As above. To get cover from the Aegis it has to cover the lower 25% or more. Which is where the gun is, meaning unless he was VERY careful to use the vision slits the guns would not be able to fire.
