If there was an allied army of Tau and Grey Knights, what would be the fluff behind them? (Assuming Grey Knights are the more present side of the list)

The tau sept encounters a chaos warband which makes extensive used of daemons and possessed, either that or there is a group trying to open/already has opened a warp gate on a planet and the GK make a desperate alliance with the Tau to try and destroy the warp gate

Tau are incapable of being corrupted, thus the GK exploit them to fight against a Chaos incursion too large for the force they have on hand. Filthy xenos can be exterminated later when it's convenient.

Ah but wouldn't the GK just paint their armor with the Tau blood? Purple Knights FTW!

No silly. Everybody knows Tau blood is blue.

The fluff would be the GKs and Tau have a common enemy. Either a chaos incursion or a tainted artifact. The Tau may be trying to secure the artifact to study it, in their naivety. The GKs are moving to secure it and the Tau are a convenient distraction.

Seems pretty generic, Grey Knights use Tau as bait, fodder, pawns etc. Then maybe the GK wipe them all out after. I'm thinking radical ideas...thoughts?

Radical idea: The Grey Knights don't try to exterminate the Tau because their job is killing daemons and giving Matt Ward an erection, not exterminating xenos.

In the interest of posterity, after the battle they ask the Tau to please leave and then call the Deathwatch.

Wrong.
They ask them to gather for a nice group pic and give those coordinates to the ordo xeno inquisitor in orbit.

The only aliens Grey Knights have alliance with are the Eldar, and that is only because Eldar are old and powerful enemies of Chaos and thus respected by Grey Knights.
Grey Knights even returned entire Craftworld to Eldar after they liberate it from Daemons assailing it.

What can Tau gave them beside technology? And Grey Knights already have the finest Imperium can offer, from psychic ammo to personal teleporters.

Tau warp technology is woeful compared to other races.

As to Brother Captain Alaxander: the alliance with the Eldar is the only one we are directly told of (bar the Jereko) in fluff. But the GK codex is full of fluff that says they have multiple treaties with different races.

It's woefully slow (though not as slow as some people think), but it dosen't enter the warp and that could be useful in some cases. Maybe they need to transport a demon artifact that and you don't want to risk of going through the warp. Geller fields can fail, and the webway can be breached, but with a tau ship you don't have that worry.

Well grey knights could give tau information on over races and resources close to them and tau could give technology, over stuff and slowly gain respect from the grey knights.

The Tau have absolutly nothing to offer the GKs as far as Technology goes.

Only the Necrons, Eldar, and a couple other minor races have anything worth having in the fight against chaos.

alright here is the fluff for any different match that may occur.

for Marines: The GK have come around to the greater good.

For chaos: why pass up a useful tool, the GK are using the tau.

For Eldar's: Tau are fooled easily, loyal to there belief till death. makes them more trust worthy than the eldar.

For nekrons, orks n nids: well obviously some $$$$ is going down and they prefer the tau over the planet killing Xenos.

For guard and sisters: the GK found them to be too extreme in there treatment and actions to the tau, so declared them as traitor's and decided to help tau as a redemption for the actions of the imperium to fail in detecting the traitors.

Not perfect fluff the the team up, but honestly what is perfect fluff for GK team ups.

1. why would they need the Tau, the Tau use the most simple method of travel, it wouldn't be hard for an IoM ship to achieve and probably wouldn't require any alterations.

2. The IoM is able to transport Black Ships through the warp to Terra, these are ships that contain massive amounts of untrained psykers. If them can do that they can transport a single deamon artifact.

3. Grey Knights/Grey Knight ships are probably the best protected things in the warp. Even if a gellar field faltered, the Grey Knights would probablystill be ok.

4. The time it would take that ship to travel from point A to point B would mean that the ship would be more succeptable to attack, just due to the massive difference in travel time.

Maybe they can't do number one. If they can, they might end up slower then a tau ship that is better at being primitive.

Maybe the artifact interferes with your ability to breach the warp. Something like the pylons at the cadia gate. Any ship it's placed on would be unable to actually enter the warp.

I can do this all day too. The point of the thread is to think up reasons for the tau and GKs to be buddy buddy.

I agree with Hlaine and BC Alexander. Tau and Gk have nothing in common (or cause at that matter) Tau is just trying to increase the size of there empire, while GK could care less as their one and only goal is to banish daemons. Gk would team with them and shoot them afterwards not out of an umoral sense but, that of what the case always is, to protect their existence.

Although a little off-topic. the case of ally which in my books would mever occur, despite the rule book dis-agreeing with me is Dark Eldar and Gk. There is just no way they'd ever ally. As Dark Eldar's existence is practically chaos and sinister in nature, through torture and living to inflict pain on others as a way to gain strength.

You asked the question wrong.

The Tau and IoM would never just simply ally up unless they have a greater threat.

Well obviously I mean they wouldn't walk up up to each other and say "Let's be friends." A common enemy is somewhat implied. But in this case, let's say Orks? And what about Necron...

Orks: The Orks looted a daemon weapon and don't realize that it could cause <technobabble> and open a warp rift. The Orks were already fighting some Tau, so the Grey Knights fight with the Tau.

Necrons: The Necrons are probably the hardest enemy to justify the Grey Knights fighting; I guess the best answer would be "The Necrons ambushed some Grey Knights who can't teleport back to their ship after destroying a daemon artifact with the assistance of the Tau. Although the GK already phoned the Ordos Xenos, they decide to fight with the Tau so that they don't die against the Necrons."

Necrons are easy enough.

It could be one of two things(or some others)

1) The Necrons are working for Trazyn who has gotten his mitts on a daemon artifact the GKs need to secure.

2) The GKs are raiding a crypt for some Tesseracts.

And in either situation the Tau happened to be nearby and fighting the same necrons.

The GKs finally bit off more than they could chew by engaging such an enormous demon host, that their company is cut down to a just few units. They garrison inside an imperial bastion and begin praying that their demise won't involve being used as toilet paper by larger demons.
A Tau expeditionary force wanders through the sector and their scans reveal the situation to the Shas' O. This commander decides that the GKs may be worth saving, if not as rumor mongers spreading word of Tau superiority, then as potential converts to the Greater Good. Striking an alliance with these creatures in danger of annihilation could ripple outward to other SM chapters. Perhaps their eyes will at last be opened to the folly of their superstitious rites and technophobia. His cadre descends with massed submunition ordnance which emboldens the desperate SMs...
