Hi - I was wondering if the new forge world Horus heresy book was worth getting just for the background and fluff? Is the writing any good or is it more for the rules? I won't be playing with any of the rules but I don't want to invest $140 just for bad fluff writing.

Thanks!

I bought it mostly (90%) for the background and I have not been disappointed in the slightest. That said, there are no startling revelations. If you've read Index Astartes, you won't find much new -- just greater detail.

It is filled with some great fluff yes. It actually goes into high detail of pre-Great Crusade/Horus Heresy Terra and the earliest days of the Imperium. We haven't gotten any real detailed descriptions of it since the Codex Imperialis days and some snippets in the HH novel series.

That's true. For example, I did not realize that the Emperor remade humanity as one of his genetic projects. Basically, pre-unification Terra was such a gak hole that genuine Homo sapiens sapiens were pretty nearly extinct. No mention of whether the Emperor gradually purged Terra of un-helpful mutants (as opposed to Navigator Houses), however.
