Subject: New Jersey to deploy military trucks to serve as polling places

MOONACHIE, N.J. – New Jersey will deploy military trucks to serve as polling places on Election Day in storm-battered communities, the state secretary of the state announced Thursday during a visit to this flood-ravaged town. The state is also extending the deadline on mail-in ballots.
Department of Defense trucks will be parked at regular polling places that have lost power, as long as the sites are still accessible. Paper ballots will be used.
Republican Secretary of State and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno said voters will find "a DOD truck with a well-situated National Guardsman and a big sign saying, "Vote Here."
Guadagno said it was still unclear how many of the state's 3,000 polling places are without power, but she would know by Friday. Alternate sites are to be identified in cases where polling places are gone, she said.
More than 1.6 million electric customers in New Jersey remained without power Thursday night.
The state also extended the deadline for when county clerks may accept mail-in ballot applications to the close of business Friday. Election officials said they could be handed in as late as Election Day, by the close of the polls.
The secretary of state urged as many people as possible in storm-damaged areas to vote by mail-in ballot because, she said, "obviously in places like Seaside Heights and Sea Bright, there is no polling place, it's gone."
"There's no reason not to vote, there's no reason not to vote today, there's certainly no reason not to vote on Tuesday, five days from today," Guadagno said.
Gov. Chris Christie said that in areas without electricity, voting would again be "old school."
"You walk up, get a paper ballot, fill it out and hand it back in," he said.
With paper ballots to be counted, the governor said some races might be more suspenseful.
I don't think this is a good idea. At least not NG trucks.

It's not even vaguely related to the style of Government Heinlein outlined in Starship Troopers....
Which would be the perfect society if you ask me, but then I'd have already earned my citizenship so I'm biased.

Their society only appears perfect because they have little to no acknowledgement of domestic or social issues in the novel.

Even though its not mention in the book doesn't mean real world military "culture" is not aware of it.

Funny how these government officials (Some of them anyway) argue that asking people for ID to vote would 'intimidate' minorities into not voting. But asking them to vote off the back of a military vehicle with soldiers standing nearby is fine.

I find it more amusing that you think these two things are equatable.
"Asking people for ID to vote" isn't intimidating them into not voting. Not in and of itself. The argument comes from the fact that it not only targets minorities, but specific demographics. It targets the elderly in certain communities and college students, notably those who reside on campus and do not drive enough to warrant them maintaining a current driver's license. That same demographic can be used to apply to minorities(or individuals period) who are living in urban centers and reliant upon public transportation to get to/from areas.
The idea that you can "Just go and get a state issued ID card" is a bit fallacious in and of itself, as not every DMV office issues them. The nearest DMV office to me which issues state identification cards is roughly an hour and a half away...and there's no bus routes (which wouldn't matter anyways, as the nearest bus station to me is a good 20 minute drive) which go to anywhere near this DMV office.
Which means I have to either arrange a ride with a friend or pay for a taxi to and from the DMV office to get a state issued ID card.
All because my college issued ID card is not considered "valid" by Republicans who are trying to pass these Voter ID laws in the name of "voter fraud prevention".
I have identification. I have more than enough to go and actually buy a firearm in my state, but I cannot vote.
You tell me that is even remotely logical.
Anyways, the idea that the soldiers are "standing over you forcing you to vote" is as laughable as the 'outrage' about the UN observers at the polls.

Explain what was so horrible about South Carolina's law then? The Voter ID cards were going to be free. Free transportation was going to be offered to those who don't have any of there own. The only thing that the citizens of S.C. had to do was sit at the DMV for a few hours one day, and your old/poor/disenfranchised probably have nothing better to do anyways if they truly have no other form of acceptable photo ID.
Yet that law got voted down. Automatically Appended Next Post: Why the fear of the military providing trucks for this? It's the National Guard who are doing it, not the Federal Active Duty folks. The National Guard is controlled by the state, just like all polling places are. There is no federal encroachment at all on this.

Christie already stated old school paper ballots. If anyone in the NG screws up transporting them or they use felt tip pens instead of ballpoints..incase they get wet. The military as a whole will get a "blackeye". US Military as a whole is lumped with Active, reserves and national guards. I seriously DOUBT they pull a Black Panther episode.

Lets see,
Voting on pieces of paper with physical writing utensils (as we in New Hampshire, along with so many other people in other states, already do)
vs.
Disenfranchisement because Hurricane Sandy picked a great time to strut her stuff.
Hmm, I would take "Voting" over "Not Voting" every single time

And how is Obama going to do this?
Congressional action? Ha! that's a contradiction.
Taxation? Nope, that must come through Congress.
Executive order? One USC 1983 action against the United States (along with an almost immediate federal district court injunction) would shut this down right quick.
So ... how?
