Hey guys I'm looking to start an empire army with the various units I've acquired from a friend. I'm a tad lacking in infantry blocks but have other interesting pieces I was thinking something like this.
Arch lector 100
Captain. 60
Battle wizard (was thinking beasts, light, or celestial) 65
Heroes 225
40 spear men. 200
10 Halberdier detachment 60
10 handgunner detachment. 90
Core 350
Cannon 120
4 demigryph knights 232
Special 352
This is just a base Nd leaves me 63 points. I have plenty more handgunnners, a hell storm rocket battery, a hell fire volley gun, 10 knights, 10 archers, an engineer , and the special archer character. I also have the Theodore brucknere from forge world. I will be playing mostly lizard men and dwarves with the occasional brettonian. Is this a good starts? How should I kit out my heroes? Are there any other radical changes I should make? Any help is greatly appreciated I have never played with or against this army so I'm shooting in the dark here. Thanks.

From what I understand, Halberds are still the best Core choice in an Empire Army. Spears are nice for the extra rank of attacks, but Halberds give you S4.
I would use either Handgunner or Crossbow detachments for the Halberds, so if they get charged, you get to respond with a bunch of shots back into your opponent.
Make sure to take a BSB!

Thanks for the reply! I have read similar about the spearmen. They are mainly to soak up damage. I was actually considering dropping the halberd detatchment and down grading the lector for some knights to give the army a little more punch do you think that would work?

I would add more handguns or swap in a volley gun. Especially if they are heavy on skink skirmishers, the ranged weapons will tear them up before they can come in with blowpipes.

I'm in a similar predicament, I bought a semi assembled empire army and the empire brigade box. The assembled army has a unit of 40 spearmen, I have thought hard about to keep them "as is" or convert them to halbrediers. Spearmen only get the extra rank when they don't charge which is a negative. My other army is also the Beastmen, and they get a magic banner that gives them +1S and in a 40 strong unit of gor that runs about 2 points per model, so really the 1pt difference is not much at all.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Ok thanks guys! So trade spears for halberds and when I play the lizards with my orks he usually has two groups of skinks and a big unit of saurus so would handgunners still be worth it their pretty expensive.
