I've been playing recently, i purchased back when the early alpha started on the 15th. (Although i haven't played in a week or so due to work.)
In its current alpha state its a little rough and only has around half of the current Colorado map playable, but in a few months when they've had a chance to actually add more to the game it should be much better. Personally i feel that too many people are comparing it to the current state of DayZ, and are not considering the massive fact that DayZ has had a good 7-8 months more public development time. To me its at least on par with the early version of DayZ.
Overall the gameplay is similar to DayZ, you try to survive by scavenging food and water and dealing with zombies and potentially other players.
Like Palindrome said WarZ is a bit more casual than DayZ, you have access to a global inventory (essentially a bank.) where you can store/take items that are spread out between all your characters. You can only access the global inventory by being in one of the few safe settlements scattered around the map. You can't be attacked in these settlements at the moment, but i remember reading how they planned to allow bandits to eventually be able to do full on assaults of these areas. You can be killed though when you're a hundred feet or so outside the safe zone.
Guns and ammo are way too easy to find right now in my opinion, to the point where a decent amount of earlier alpha players have a large arsenal saved up in their global inventories. A few weeks ago it was found out that specific guns were a guaranteed spawn at certain locations, so quite a few of these spots were farmed heavily by the player base with some people stockpiling hundreds of sniper rifles and various full magazines before a patch randomized the loot. So due to the excess amount of firearms available, long range PKers are a constant threat. (There has been talk from the developers about possibly doing a global inventory wipe to deal with this.) But because of the mention of a wipe some of the people who were stockpiling weapons are griefing the game by camping spawn points with guns.
