Subject: What's Erebus up to these days???
|
 |
Crushing Black Templar Crusader Pilot

I'm a BT/SM/DA player so I'm not very familiar with the CSM codexes, however, why isn't Erebus more prominent????
I've read all the Horus Heresy book, and it seems to me that he's arguably one of the most influential (I would almost say THE most influential) character in triggering the heresy (nudged Lorgar into exploring the Ruinous Powers, schemed the battle that would eventually wound Horus and then had him turned to Chaos; and countless other evil plans...). While Horus planned the assault on Terra, it seems to me that Erebus was the mastermind behind starting the Heresy altogether.
It seems to me that he's nowhere to be seen these days? Is he chilling on a Daemon-world? Smoking some warp-dust with Lorgar? No special character in the CSM codex? You'd think that such a powerful character in the HH background who's still alive in the 40th millenia would be an excellent character for the new codex or at least more prominent in the "current" books...
Anyway, can a friendly Dakkanaut fill me in on Erebus' status?
Much obliged.

This is purely speculation:
He was a pawn. The Chaos Gods had little interest in Erebus. Erebus was a skilled orator, and nothing more. He didn't have the potential that the Primarchs did, or even the potential that other certain Astartes had like Abaddon, Ahriman, and Typhus. But, Erebus was close to Lorgar. The Chaos Gods seduced him and used him as a mouthpiece. Following the Heresy, he had fulfilled his purpose and the Gods had no more interest in him.
Erebus never became a Daemon Prince. He isn't like Abaddon, who has been offered it many times and denied it. Erebus is a fanatic, the type who would accept the offer on the spot. But, to the Gods, he's not worth it.

He's still around and engaged in a power struggling for control of the WB's world of Sicarius with Kor Phaeron. See the Dark Apostle Trilogy.
In the 13th Black Crusade he more or less the WB forces as well and is central to the Crimson Path scheme Abaddon has.

He isn't a character in the chaos codex because he's a relatively new character in the fluff. The special characters in the chaos codex were established when the Horus Heresy was a nebulously referenced piece of fluff whose characters & events weren't set in stone. It's only with the advent of the novel series that we've found out who was about during the Heresy, how things went down & what the Primarchs were actually 'like' as people. Whereas characters like Abbaddon & Kharn have been well established chaos characters pretty much forever.

Erebus is now happily playing games with Kor Phaeon, that is, when he isn't summoning warpstorms to cut of the Cadian Gate from the Imperium of Man.

Really?! I've only been laying 40k since the last chaos dex came out and wasn't that into the fluff to start with.
I'm amazed that something as major as the heresy has onyl recently started getting more fleshed out. So befroe the series was it just soemthing mentioned in little bits of fluff?

If Erebus doesn't survive the HH, then there wouldn't be a character for him in the Chaos book, right? Is he still alive in the 40k universe (as opposed to the 30k universe)? What book?

He's still alive.
According to Haraticus, the Dark Apostle series.

Yes he's mentioned specifically at the end of Dark Disciple,
Additionally in the GW newsletters for the 13th Black Crusade global campaign and for the background book for it, he's mentioned as sacrificing worlds to summon Daemons/Warp Storms, which in 6th Ed fits nicely with the whole "Crimson Path" addition.
GW is well aware he's alive as is BL. Though they could always retcon it I suppose but I don't see any reason to.

Believe it or not, it was better that way. Instead of a mythical age of heroes and monsters we now get all kinds of badly written BL horus heresy novels ( with the occasional well written book sprinkled in between ) to know in detail when spessmuhreen 08/15 killed a thousand orks/eldar/traitor marines/generic aliens or when one of the primarchs took a short break of being awesome in order to have a short a toiletbreak.

I do think the HH should have eventually been told given how seminal it is to the 40k universe, but in something like 8 or so books.
