We know if a model has a cover save from any of the firing models in one unit, it gets that cover save against all of the fire.

Can some models choose not to shoot so as to not provide any cover save?

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

Yes. I was rather surprised but a close read says so.
Cover is granted to models "at least 25% obscured from the point of view of at least one firer" pg 18
As per pg 13, "A player can choose not to fire with certain models if he prefers...". You do need to specify before rolling to hit, of course.
Seems kind of cheesy, but it's perfectly legal. I'll have to remember that next time I play.

Same in 5th, as well. You use the models that are actually firing to determine if there is cover, meaning sometimes not firing some guns will yield a better result.

Except in 5th you would determine majorities. Now you need only 1 shooter with a pole in front of him.

True, but again you were allowed to not fire with certain models (and 4th, and 3rd, for sure) in order to change cover. Its just cover is easier to get in 6th , but is worked out model by model for the shot-at unit
