Whilst browsing through the new Chaos Space Marine Codex, I was struck by the options in the Chaos Sorcerer Army List entry. I always run my Sorcerer in Terminator armour (I have a weakness for Terminator HQs), but I suppose this applies to power-armour Sorcerers too. Anyways, it says that the sorcerer "may take items from the melee weapons.... etc" and a Sorcerer "may replace all of his wargear with Terminator armour.... A Sorcerer in Terminator armour may take items from the Terminator Weapons...." This leads to an interesting idea.

In the wargear list under Terminator Weapons: "A model weapon Terminator armour can replace his combi-bolter with one of the following:" Among the possibilities are Lightning claws and power weapons. This could lead to some interesting combos. Lightning claw+Force Axe (for Shred against softer 1-wound targets while still retaining AP 2 and Force for heavier units), or power sword/maul + force axe (for the +1 A for two close combat weapons, while still having a weapon that strikes at initiative (i.e. against power fist-armed sergeants and still keeping your AP 2 force weapon for tougher opponents).

The wording for Melee Weapons makes it seem like you could do something similar for a sorcerer in power armour; replace the bolt pistol with another weapon.

So, I put my question before the wisdom of dakka - would this be legal, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Seems legal to me, appropriately diverse and chaos like.

Totally legit combo, especially with access to Pyromancy powers if you wanted to blast things, having 2 melee weapons on a Sorcerer can be a good thing.

Absolutely legal - as long as you bear in mind that you only get the benefits of one weapon at a time, and take the cost into account, it's not even unfair to do so.
Bear in mind also that Space Marine characters have been able to do this for years - Power Fist and Lightning Claw, for example.

You mean months when it comes to making real use of the PF and claw example :p

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

Well now it is good, but before 6th it wasn't too neccessary.

I agree completely. It was never really good, but we could do it.
Now there's actually an advantage to it

Tactical advantage was limited in 5th, IMHO, a character that is all combat like a Wolf Lord should have maxed out hit attacks at either I1 or I5 while still retaining a 3++(4++ if you are lucky).

Now it is a different story, it expensive but it is a very well rounded build on a combat monster.

My friend rolled PF/CLaw because I rolled with 5 Dreadnoughts and had terrible melta luck. It was very situational but it helped him a little.
Used to run Vulkan;MoTF Dread heavy in pods

Yeah, the armament was limited in scope - only for the chance of facing Walkers, really - but my point was, the opportunity was THERE. Why would Chaos be denied it...?
