Hi guys,

I'm looking to place an order from K&J magnetics http://www.kjmagnetics.com/products.asp?cat=10. Shipping to Japan is expensive, so I'd like to order a variety of the most relevant magnets used in our hobby. I don't really know which sizes are too small and which are too big. Specifically, my current project is a tyranid army, so I'll need magnets for 3 Tervigons/Tyrannofex, 2 Hive Tyrants, 2 Carnifexs, and 2 Trygons. Does anyone have experience with these kits. I'd appreciate recommendations for specific products listed on the site I linked.

Thanks a bunch!

3/16" is about the diameter of a space marine's arm slot on the torso, to give you an idea of scale. 1/16" is usually thick enough, but if you want more stability on larger models go with 3/32" thickness.

1/4" would be quite large and likely noticeable on models, especially organic pieces.

I use 3/16"x 1/16" http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D301-N52 for most everything that I magnetize, as the thin profile means that I can usually get away with not having to drill out holes for them.

Since you are living in Japan, you might want to check out Ebay, a lot of different sellers on there, and I've seen a few that are out of China, so the shipping shouldn't be as bad.

Also, I found this a long time ago, and it might help you on the sizes you need for your figures.

It lists all the different armies for 40K.

For the models he mentioned, all Tyranid monstrous creatures, I reckon 1/4" is a good size. Anything much smaller and you'll find the arms might want to rotate (they shouldn't fall off, but they may droop).

For anything smaller than a monstrous creature, like a Tyranid Warrior, Space Marines, etc etc, go with a smaller magnet. Personally I bought mine from an ebay shop and they were so cheap I just bought a ton of different sizes.

I second the Ebay idea. I got magnets there for about 1/10th the price.

Remember, magnets come in different "strength" values. The higher the number, the stronger and more expensive the magnet.

For my tyranid MC"s I use 1/4" diameter 1/16" thick magnets.

N42's work fine, but if you have a metal tyrant n52 is a bit better.

For warrior and tyrant guard arms, I use 1/8x 1/16" n52.

best of luck
