It would be important since it would be the only way to send meaningful networks between planets. Otherwise, networks would be limited to single planets and orbiting moons.
Maybe prolonged internet use would result in Warp exposure and a greater chance of corruption. And people who use the internet constantly speak in ways such as shoop da whoop and yo dawg and trololololol.
But seriously though, would it work?

You can send messages through the warp, so hypothetically you could send stuff through. But I doubt you could maintain websites and that sort of thing. Also, It'd be too impractical for anyone to use.

Only Astropathic messages can be sent through the Warp.
They are akin to telegrams. One way communications.
It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few months for messages to get through. Depending on distance and warp turbulance.
So anything resembling the Internet will be limited to a single system.
Theoretically, you could have Astropathic choirs send periodic bulk updates between multiple systems. Sort of like a bulk download. But it would not be anything approaching instantanious communication. It could be weeks or months between updates.

I imagine instant messaging through the Warp would go something like:
Emperor'sGal53 Says:
So Hey man you up for the disco tonight?
Thorian69 Says:
MAY SLAANESH FEAST UPON YOUR SOUL

My Armies:
5,500pts
2,700pts

Most Imperial Planets are self sufficient, only sending astrotelepathic communications in dire circumstances, like an invasion.
In Dawn of War 2, it took the lives of every astropath and all but one librarian to send the messages and tactical data that Angelos provided the 4th Company.
If the Imperium had something akin to the Subspace Ansible, it would probably be one of the most important tactical advantages they could possibly get. Instantaneous messages without going through the Warp would make mobilizing the Guard that much easier.

There's intra-system instantaneous communications but astropathic communication is the only extra-system communication method (apart from message boats and such).
Their Internet equivalent in the Noosphere.

Yes should be noted the only way to communicate effectively beyond the system-level is Astropaths, which are glorified Telegraphs and unreliable themselves. But still better then nothing.

I was imagining this in a small scale, not quite a system, but a single sector. Throughout the whole sector, it might not be fast enough for IMing I suppose. Depending on the strength of the router, it might be able to send messages farther, but it would take a long time. Does that sound about right? The number of jokes I'm holding back about the internet and the Warp is overwhelming. It's especially bad with the whole visions of insanity and what has been seen cannot be unseen. It is an immaterial realm that is influenced by the thoughts of mortals, and events in the immatrium affect the physical world.

Systems are smaller than sectors.
System refers to planetary systems, our Solar system for example. A Sector is made up of systems (which are often first grouped into sub-sectors).
So no a sector would be too great a distance. The time lag alone wouldn't make it worth it.
Between nearby planets though there is instantaneous (or near as) communications.

Subsector Aurelia contains three habitable planets, each orbiting its own sun. The other planets in these systems are either inhospitable or just moons.
Subsector communication on an instantaneous scale appears to be possible due to the interconnected Dark Age of Technology relics scattered across Typhon Primaris, Calderis and Meridian, like the Teleportarium, or the Astronomic Array.
I doubt that is common for other sectors however.

But seriously though, would it work?
Apart from the fact only psychic messages can be made in the warp and that the internet requires either wire (limiting distance) or waves (limiting speed), why would the IoM want an empire spanning information network:
1. The IoM doesn't want knowledgable locals
2. Sending it over the warp would allow any enemy to find that data.
3. It would allow an entrance for Dark Mech/Deamons to take over IoM systems (its bad enough having China constantly trying to cyber attack, just think how bad it is if chaos started doing it.

I was thinking about having sth like a giant router in the SK sector (like a miniature, local version of the Golden Toilet Throne) that would send out signals, and each world would send information to each other.

Yes, you can, but it would then likely be, erm, warped, and come out as the scrapcode that screwed over Guilliman's fleet at Calth or corrupted that Magus that was kidnapped by Honsou.

As said before, even if its possible its an idiotic idea when you count the races and factions that want to actively destroy the IoM. You also have to take into account the massive time difference between sending a message and recieving it, which would make the system of little us.
There is also the fact that you seem to be assuming that the warp is a mirror image of material space when it comes to spacial placing, it is not. So you just could not send a beam out in a straight line and have it hit its target destination.

No, the signals sent through the warp are conscious images transmitted from one mind to another one. One psyker uses the Emperor's Tarot and an intricate codification system to break down the message into psychic impressions made up of the images of the card, transmit it through the warp, then another one recompose the message.
The closest analogue we have would be dream interpretations, except it's someone else's dreams, a few light years away. There's no way to actually send a wavelength in the warp.
