Dear Dakka,
So I've done one test miniature - of course he hasn't been weathered and washed yet but he was done with airbrushing VA grey primer and some black pre-shading before applying a VGC Imperial Blue basecoat.

I am happy with the result, but I'd like to add white pre-highlighting before the basecoat for more colour variation. As well as this I am considering adding some VGC Heavy Red to the Black pre-shade, maybe at a 1:4 ratio? I've heard that mixing opposing colours into shadows can enhance the chosen base colour.

Will this be a bad colour choice or poor ratio? I'm eager to push my abilities and experiment with airbrushing.

Cheers.

You'd probably be better off adding a little light grey or perhaps tan to your base coat and just do the highlighting after. Can't really see what you gain by attempting to preshade / pretone on this. Filters (especially oil dot)applied later on are I think a quicker and easier way of doing colour modulation (which is what you're talking about). More correctible if things go tits up too.
