First I’d like to say thank you for taking the time to read this. I’m a new mini wargamer and a new DakkaDakka member, and this is my first post ever! I’m so new to 40k that I’ve not even chosen my first army yet. At least not until I’ve asked this question.
GW has offered up a large variety of play styles and themes in the form of the many armies you can choose from their 40k roster. My problem is that there isn’t one I wouldn’t want to collect!
I like the unrelenting evil power and the rapid viciousness of the Daemons, and the grim, heretical nature and the brute force of the CSM’s. I totally get the “sick and twisted in a sexy way” DE, and their wise forefathers blessed with ancient knowledge – stricken from greatness by the birth of a Chaos God. Epic.
I even like the undying loyalty and faith to The God Emperor of Mankind found in pretty much all the human factions. I’m still getting my head around the reason for the numerous SM chapters. But I guess it’s a good thing to choose from a variety of ways of tackling the same task. I especially admire the paladin-esque “power in purity” of the Grey Knights.
I love the crazy randomness of the Orkz! That must be a really entertaining army to play; I reckon no two games are the same when fielding Orkz! Waaargh! I’ts a shame they couldn’t hit a barn door from ten yards, but boy can they bludgeon stuff to death! And they use teeth as money – that’s so cool!
The Tau are the space communists. And the most naive. I don’t think they fit the Grimdark set of the 40k universe. But they do have giant flying mech suits – and a S10 AP1 skimmer!
I think the Nids and Necrons are the actual “bad guys” of the 40k universe and for that reason alone I’d field them. The Necrons especially because, firstly, they’re evil Egyptian terminators with kick-ass guns! And secondly because they
keep getting back up! Not even Chuck Norris can do that.
So in order to help me make my mind up I thought I’d ask you guys for your opinions (because I’m obviously unable to form opinions of my own – ouch!) Actually I’d like to ask you three simple questions, if I could.
1) In order, what would you consider are the three most common armies you seem to always come up against.
2) And in respective order, what three armies would you choose to fight against each of them.
3) Lastly, what’s your army faction and why did you choose to play them?
Thanks for reading my first post and I hope you post your opinion as I look forward to reading it.
Mick

First, welcome
Now, on to your questions.
1) Space Marines, Orks and Eldar.
2) Other Space Marines, Necrons and Space Marines. Alternatively, against all the other armies, Grey Knights.
3) Space Marines. I simply loved their models, background and the idea of making your own Chapter (Space Marine army, consisting of 1000 marines usually and yer own colours an' all)
So, welcome again
And Chuck Norris can get back up. He really can.

Space marines, orks, guard.
Personally, I would counter all three with various guard armies. An armoured company for the sm. an airborne company for the orks, and out maneuvering against the guard.
I generally play inquisition, but as part of that, I like to keep a force of space marines and guard on the side to field next to my grey knights. So if you are wanting to start off with lots of units for not that much money, you can get a guard platoon or what would equate to a space marine scout force from gw for not a lot of cash. Playing inquisition though is relatively expensive just because the grey knights pay both in points and in cash for their small numbers. Happy gaming.

1) In order, what would you consider are the three most common armies you seem to always come up against. Marines, other marines, and other other marines. I'd say over half the armies are some variety of marines, but after all those, I would say orks, then necrons. 2) And in respective order, what three armies would you choose to fight against each of them. Against marines, I would take my own marines, or my daemons. Against orc's, I would take daemons for sure. Against necrons, also Daemons. 3) Lastly, what’s your army faction and why did you choose to play them? I do have a few marines, but my main army if you can't tell, is chaos daemons. I play them because they are 1. Not all that commonly played. 2. Really awesome models, unique looking in 40k, for both troops and giant monsters 3. They play so differently to every other army, as they don't deploy, they just appear wherever you want and wreak havoc. 4. The army, has 4 different flavours, khorne daemons are very melee, slaneesh are very quick, tzeench are shooty, and nurgle, my favourite, are slow but super tough zombies pretty much. I personally field a nurgle daemons army. It's like playing a zombie horde, with giant daemons flying over the battle and breathing acid. It's unbeleivably awesome, and really throw's off people who are used to facing armoured targets. So yeah, my advice is to consider every army, look at which one takes your fancy (Preferably a daemon one *cough cough*) And then come back on dakka and look up some little guides to playing them. That will give you a basic feel for how they play. But remember, if you are just starting out, don't pick imperial guard, orc's, or tyranids, as they need a heck of a lot of time, energy, and money, to make, as you need so many models xD Good luck PS, the true evil in 40k, is chaos, either the chaos marines, or the chaos god's and their daemons!

Hi and welcome to dakka!!
1) In order, what would you consider are the three most common armies you seem to always come up against.
1) I think the most common factions played in warhammer 40K are:
1.the space marines however this doesn't bother me that much because there are lots of different styles of play for the space marines and they are a nice looking army, however it does get quite boring when its space marines vs space marines all the time.
2. Blood angles, now even though these are space marines they are a very glorified chapter and have a separate codex, they are very annoying to play due to the similar play style throughout the army and very powerfull sc 's.
3. I think number 3 has to be the Orks, but they are a very fun army to play and even if the game is orks vs orks it still does happen in fluff etc.
2) And in respective order, what three armies would you choose to fight against each of them.
Against space marines and blood angles you could use anything, because they don't really have much of a weakness, i do use tyranids/orks or imperial guard against space marines because 1 they have lots of troops, 2 they get lots of attacks (3+ armour will fail eventually!) and 3 imperial guard have lots of AP 3 weaponry like hotshot lasguns, battle cannons and missile launchers and tyranids get large monstrous creatures (no armour saves!) and orks get power klaws! All good for cracking SM power armour.
Against orks i would go with imperial guard (I am quite the imperial tread head!) Simply because first rank fire! second rank fire! makes mince meat of ork boys at range, and the leman russ destroy pretty much anything ork, but when the orks get close to you your pretty screwed!
3) Lastly, what’s your army faction and why did you choose to play them?
Now i play . all the factions excluding dark eldar, eldar chaos/daemons, blood angles and necrons. But i do love playing as the death korps of krieg. They are pretty much an imperial guard army but the models are some of the best i've ever seen! But they are a very expensive army to invest in. I like them because of their WS 4 guardsmen and their artillery, i've seen thudd guns tear apart space marine and grey knight squads alike (i play against lots of marine armies!). They look great on the table and you just send in wave after wave of WW1 style infantry at your foe!
Hope this helped in whatever way possible, welcome to 40k!

Thanks for the response guys!
I gues Grey Knights would be the best army to begin with. Which is cool because they have cool fluff and can take terminaters as troops! And omg the dreadnight! Moar dreadnite pleez.
Thanks again for your help guys!

Grey knights are good if you have the money, and also a tip when painting their eyes: paint them white then give them a blue wash, it looks so much better than just painting it with a layer/base paint!

I agree with Grey Knights, and they come with the added bonus of being a less expensive (monetary) army too.
