So is this actual marriage or civil partnership? Meh, either way it's a step in the right direction. Plus you can get stoned at the reception and not go to jail!
Another brick in the wall of our civilization is torn away as the mortar of our collective morality is worn away! Woe betide those who...yawn...
Where was I?
Oh yeah, who cares? Make it national, then call me. Until then it's too little too late.

Well done Washington. Opposition to gay marriage is fething moronic.

In other news, everyone has a go at the US for its religiously driven social conservatism, but credit where credit is due at least you're having the debate. It looks more and more like you'll get gay marriage long before Australia will.
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Doesn't it have to be a coherent sentence (or any recognizable language for that matter) in order to even qualify as an argument?
I have no idea what he just wrote, but it certainly wasn't English.

Washington is doomed. Don't the people living in Seattle know that they're right next to a major volcano? When Mt. Rainier wipes Seattle off the map as God's vengeance for this abomination maybe then people will listen to the Bible!

While I'm glad to see the march of civil rights proceeding apace, my preference far and away would be for the government to exit the marrying business.
Marriage is a private covenant between 2 consenting adults and their place of worship or secular equivalent; there simply is no role for the state to play in it. My 2 cents.

Right there with you Ouze, I would much rather see the Government not involved at all.
The most interesting part of this vote is that it was done by people via ballot initiative. This is the first time gay marriage has been legalized by way of popular vote.

Those who seek absolute power, even though they seek it to do what they regard as good, are simply demanding the right to enforce their own version of heaven on earth. And let me remind you, they are the very ones who always create the most hellish tyrannies. Absolute power does corrupt, and those who seek it must be suspect and must be opposed. Their mistaken course stems from false notions of equality, ladies and gentlemen. Equality, rightly understood, as our founding fathers understood it, leads to liberty and to the emancipation of creative differences. Wrongly understood, as it has been so tragically in our time, it leads first to conformity and then to despotism. Fellow Republicans, it is the cause of Republicanism to resist concentrations of power, private or public, which enforce such conformity and inflict such despotism. It is the cause of Republicanism to ensure that power remains in the hands of the people. ”
