Subject: Playing with my son, Cygnar and Khador

My son and I got to play our FLGS and had a blast. We really enjoyed playing Khador (me) and Cygnar (my son) so I am thinking of going with the BattleGroups to start our play (mostly between ourselves, but probably at the above mentioned store). I am wondering what will work well when we feel like expanding beyond the initial battle box (I figure those will be great for getting used to the rules and not get overwhelmed with TOO many). With an eye on keeping things fairly balanced between these two factions. Hopefully this is the right forum for this type of conversation.

Fortunatly, there really isn't such a thing as a bad unit. Units may be bad in certain lists but you really can just purchase whatever catches your eye.
I'd increase your forces in incriments of 5 or 10 points at a time.
For Khador, you will probably want to get a box of Man-o-wars as your next purchase. There are 3 types and each is slightly different, but as I said it isn't that important to get one over the other. You tend to see Shock Troopers and Demo-korps more then the Assault-korps.
For Cygnar, a unit of knights with UA might be good, some Long Gunners with UA, or some Trenchers perhaps. Once he gets another Jack, getting a Journyman Warcaster is a worthwhile solo. It basically gives you a second warcaster to fuel another jack and relieve the burden on your main caster.

Very cool, I will check those out. I already picked up the Prime MKII book. Looking at getting the battle groups soon.
Since we seem fairly set on our factions, is it worth picking up the books for them as well?

Well for what its worth I like the cygnar book. But I just like getting all the rulebooks I could possibly need.
It does have rules for casters (and units I think) who aren't in the 2010 card deck, so that is good...

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own... |

I have the War Room app on my tablet, not quite the same as having the cards, but close enough for my purposes. Will be looking into the faction books soon as well, thanks!

I am not sure I agree 100% with this. From a competitive standpoint, I think there are units that are bad for certain players and casters. I think there are also units that are overcosted and you can do the same thing or even better with other units. And purchasing whatever catches your eye means you will probably be missing out on alot of synergies which is what alot of this game is about.
For example, a cygnar player will probably get alot more out of gunmages + UA for Cygnar than long gunners+ UA. Point for point gunmages are usually better and are alot more flexible. High DEF and RAT, able to shoot stealth, variety of shots gives lots of options and are great jack marshall's for out shooty warjacks due to runeshot. Long gunners are better at some things. If you want that in your list then go for it. But you'll see alot more cygnar players running gun mages than long gunners because of their versatility.
Now if you are just looking for cool models or ones you like then by all means go that route.
@ OP: My advice is to play a bit and then do some research. Your main thing is to pick a caster that you think you will enjoy playing. Then build up a list around what works well with them and your style. Building up in 5-10 point stages is great advice. I wouldn't jump straight into 35 or 50 point games till you have played 15 and 25 point games.

Well yeah, units will be bad with certain casters.
Changing a caster will completely change how your army plays.
The Harbinger and pKreoss have the same cost, but they are radically different and need a different army built around them.
I'll stand by my statement. There are no bad units, just bad combinations of units. And some units have more bad combos then others.

Suggesting Man-o wars? OIdd choice, they are all slow and tend to not do much. He would be much better off with widow makers, kayzay's, winter guard, great bears. Basically anything besides man-o wars.

Depends on the list naturally. But Man-o-wars are obnoxiously hard to kill and can do quite a bit of damage. They are Kador's light jacks that require no focus

This is very true, but they do need an introduction. when I was first playing I wanted to run a jack heavy man-o war list. thankfully a good friend had the models for it. the man o wars are like mini vans, if they hit you odds are you need medical attention, but they are bit slow to start.
